A letter to my unborn child

A Mother to a Child She’s Never Met

A Mother to a Child She’s Never Met

I trace your name in whispers, love,

though lips have never formed it yet.

You are the dream that lingers on,

a light my heart won’t soon forget.

I speak to you in quiet rooms,

soft lullabies the night won’t steal.

A wish, a hope, a fleeting prayer,

a love so fierce, it must be real.

Do you hear me in the hush,

where stars press secrets into sky?

Do you reach for me beyond the veil,

a question waiting to reply?

I do not know the shape of you,

the weight of fingers curled in mine.

But still, you live within my ribs,

a melody not bound by time.

If ever you should find your way,

if ever fate allows us two—

know love was here before you came,

and love will wait, and wait, for you.
