A letter to my dad

I love you dad even after all these years I cry for you

Dear Dad,

I sat holding your hand in the hospital all night when you died. I wasn’t ready for this; I still need you by my side. Cancer, pulling you to heaven's door—please don’t go, Dad; stay a while more. How can a heart so beautiful die? I don’t need anybody, Dad, just you and I.

Your eyes grow tired more each day; now God is going to take your pain far away. I couldn’t have been loved more in this life; you were the best dad. This is cutting me like a knife. You never shouted; you were patient and so kind. You loved your family and would do anything to make us all smile.

Who will I turn to, Dad? What will I do? This wicked disease should not have come to you. The nurses say it won’t be long and that you will be free of cancer when you die. I should be strong. My world is about to end today, for if this day comes, God will take your pain away.

My dad was the best, you know. I know everyone thinks this about their dad, but mine truly was an earth angel who God promoted to heaven.

So, God, please look after my dad in heaven above and tell him each day I love him, and will remember him till my last breath. Please send all my love.

My wonderful Dad, George Hurst
