A Letter Left Behind
A Poem
Somedays it’s easy to see the world for what it is,
the beauty in life and all the colors that remain vibrant in my mind.
There are other days where the world goes grey,
my memories still have the vibrancy but my eyes see the shades less than what they used to be, and my memory fades.
The heart grows colder and the mind grows darker as the world turns against me,
and I write a letter for every time I feel like the world has forsaken me one too many times,
each letter dedicated to someone who wanted me to be better and brighter, but the sunshine hasn’t found its way to me yet.
I count the tally marks, each one cutting me deeper than the last and removing a bit of my humanity every time.
I stare into the empty abyss of my mind filled with the unending hatred,
how did it all get this way?
And I write my letters over and over again until I find my reason to keep writing this chapter of my story.
But maybe this is part of it,
the letters I leave behind as reminders of the lives I’ve touched the lives of so many individual stories,
one’s I’m proud to have a feature in.
Maybe I’ll leave letters of hope behind,
so that one day I can add them to my library of life, filed away for me to reread and tell my story someday.
