A Jelly Crystal Enchantment

A sensory experience of heavenly delight

An excited giggle escapes her lips,

A five year old girl experiencing heavenly delight,

Her mile-wide smile lights up the room,

Anticipating the essence of her very next bite.

**

Gingerly, she pokes out the tip of her tongue,

Inching it towards the morsel of happiness held in her hand,

A quick touch and a gasp of glee,

Causes her taste buds to dance in demand.

**

Her tongue shivers in awe at the unexpected tingle,

A eloquent sweetness exploding upon her lips,

A gasp of joy begging for another taste,

Savouring this delight in tiny child size nips.

**

Her patience begins to wane,

Her saliva glands drown her palate, lapping at her gums,

She swallows and chows down in gustation,

Gulping down the last miscreant crumbs.

**

She closes her eyes in wonder,

Feeling the sizzle and pops against her teeth,

The coating on the roof of her mouth melting in divinity,

Exquisitely dosing her senses in awestruck disbelief.

**

This delicacy would be her first choice given the opportunity,

She’d happily gnaw down on this morsel for breakfast, lunch and tea,

Simplicity is its beauty; no cooking required,

No multitude of components, just a three ingredient recipe.

**

Start with the freshest of fresh white bread,

Slather two seperate pieces with real butter,

Ensure you smother the slice right up to the edge,

Picture perfect perfection that has her taste buds aflutter.

**

Now for the final ingredient; she waits on tenterhooks,

A packet of strawberry jelly crystals is opened in advance,

A liberal sprinkling of the sugary powder flung across the buttered surface,

Finds her tiny feet skipping and prancing in gleeful dance.

**

She holds her hands out, pleading; her tiny fingers reaching,

She feels the soft fleshiness of the sandwich clinging to her fingers,

Instantly biting down into the sweet and sour gelatinous euphoria,

And sighs theatrically as the utterly divine taste lingers.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
