A Horse of Course
The simplicity of caring for a horse.
A horse?
But of course!
Can’t be a dog,
Dancing on a log?
Even a cat,
Frolicking in a hat?
Guess a pony will do!
Hell, why not get two?
I’ll build the fence and barn,
Just as you bring her to the farm.
Keep her cozy at night,
Leave her outside during daylight.
Make sure she eats lots of hay,
Night and throughout the day.
Over the years and seasons,
Put her to work for all the right reasons.
Quickly knowing she is part of the family,
Really making sure she won’t befall tragedy.
Seeing the vet, farrier, and trainer,
Talking about health and how to maintain her.
Understanding that age will happen nonetheless,
Vexed by the toll of the process.
What else would a good owner do?
X-rays, shots, vitamins too.
You’ll eventually have to say goodbye,
Zero regrets on my mind while I cry.
