A Drowning in Spring

When spring comes back again and you don't.

Spring came back with earnest, knocking on my door and laying flower petals down along the sidewalk. Spring came back, but you never did. The white picket fences slowly turned to chain link; the gate shut and locked with a sound louder than our last I love you.

The rain fell down and raced down the road and wondered why the sky ever let it go.

I wondered why you would ever go, with a love as strong as ours.

But people are like flowers; after all, a gentle rain is life-giving. A downpour is devastating.

Maybe my love was drowning you.
