While I slept you launched your silent conquest

If I had taken up the late night watch

Would I have even noticed your onslaught

You staked your claim during the sun’s absence

As many things begotten in darkness

You beckon with a coy but shallow glint

In the blushed hues of new dawn you dazzle

Demanding awe for your frozen empire

Inviting wanderers to venture deep

Losing their way and themselves with each step

Beautiful things can be more than they seem

When danger lurks beneath the bright shimmer

I keep caution close in your company

Because if I don’t I might get bitten

But your cold reign always comes to an end

The sun’s warm rays force a quick surrender
