donkey bray
rooster crow
dog bark
horse nicker
pig snort
turkey gobble
cat meow
bright early morning feeding
hot coffee in hand
dirty muck boots on
animals wish good mornings
Two word name
farming land
rural district
surrounded by cattle pastures
undulating golden hay stalks
mountains in the distance
eponyous butte close by
One man
partner
the man never expected
but fortunately, discovered
best friend, trustworthy confidante
supporting one another both
Four distinct high desert seasons
bright new life springs
dry, hot, smokey summers
beautiful, mild, windy falls
snow covered mountain winters
grass shoots through mud
chores in cool mornings
tank days, sweatshirt nights
digging out grazing areas
country life
tomato vines and horse manure
constant dust
hummingbirds and rattlesnakes
thundering hooves, not car hornes
animals, not people
more than home, it is Home.

The Girl in the Pond
There is a pond in the old pear orchard. Every year, it freezes over, and kids love to skate on it, making spirals and figure eights until the cold reaches through their leather skates and their thick wool socks and reaches their tiny toes, and tells them it’s time or hot cocoa cinnamon cookies.

Doing it for the troops
The others dropped like flies around me. We fought and struggled to get to this point. I'm the only one left now. The objective is right there. A mere two hundred feet away. The last of my team got a bullet to the head right next to me, but I couldn't do anything. I was able to locate and neutralise the sniper as he shot my friend, so his death was at least not in vain.
