Occupy Havana
In 2017, my husband and I visited Cuba during the small window of time when the Obama administration allowed travel to this island nation. We were on a cultural/educational visit which allowed us to use a pre-approved tourist group to see the sights in Havana. Pre-approved by the government, of course, headed by Raul Castro at the time, brother of Fidel. Still very much a socialist nation with a communist constitution, very few people without family there have been able to visit freely since the early 1960s due to its relationship with USSR/Russia.

This is the last picture I took of my mom before the doctors started playing Mrs. Potato Head with her through brain surgeries and radiation that killed everything except, her. That’s why it's on my childless cat lady fridge as one of my favorite moments, even though we had many, many favorite moments since that picture.

It wasn't my idea; I was just the driver. A friend reached out asking for help with a childhood friend of hers. The childhood friend, we'll call her Valerie, was stuck in South Dakota with no ID, no car, and nobody near to help. She had escaped a situation of sexual exploitation and was trying to make her way home to Michigan.

Take a hike!. Top Story - January 2025.
A few brief years ago our merry group set off to climb a ‘mountain’. Tabletop Mountain — in S.E. Queensland — is no Everest, but it was challenge enough for us. Spring’s searing sun was already high when we abandoned our cars at its base. As the track was neither marked nor maintained, we were grateful to a chirpy, fit teenager climbing with us. Having completed the hike on a previous occasion, she agilely scampered up the incline, calling encouragement down to us. We would have been clueless without her guidance.

My Little Dove
This is what memories look like. These are the reasons we loved her. This is what we have left. I compiled these photos from all I could find of her. I'm sure there are others hidden away in some boxes and scrapbooks. But I was in a time crunch, preparing for this arrangement. This symbolized the story of her life and the love she had for her family. Oh, how she loved us!
