Different strokes for different people

You have to focus and learn fundamentals such as aperture, ISO, shutter speed, finding light, emotion, and capturing movements that apply across all types of photography. You tend to break off into different niches, just like the chefs break off into different specialties. There are many photographers who love weddings and hate newborns. Others enjoy portraying humans, but hate landscapes. The same can happen to you. You may love to work in a studio, but others may love to work outdoors with natural light. Also, you may love to shoot in digital, but others prefer film.

Do what you love to do

Do whatever type of photography sparks your soul and fills you with joy. No matter what kind of style it is. It can be black and white portraits, or macro photography of spiders, or newborn images, or even architecture. Just keep doing what you love. Follow a method which can transform your pictures in the way you always picture in your head. No matter which method it is, just do it because nobody else is doing that. You will need to have a creative voice. Your authentic voice is very important in photography.

You don’t have to do it all

If you can’t do it all, it’s alright. If someone calls you up for wedding photography, but you are actually a food photographer, it’s okay to say NO. It’s not like you have to do macro photography, whereas you’ve already found your love in photographing families.

Though it’s very daunting to admit that a specific area of photography isn’t your preference. Surely, you don’t want to feel incapable. Besides, you don’t have to be ashamed of telling someone that you don’t like a newborn booking because you aren’t familiar enough with that specific area. There is no need to master it all.

Finding your niche

Okay, you don’t have to do it all. But how do you find your niche? In that case, you need to try everything you can. Try different types of photography and don't feel like you’re compelled to master every type of photography. When you give a try to different types of genres of photography, it allows you to experiment and discover what is your preference.

You have to make yourself humble and learn from someone else if possible. Because if you want to be a good photographer, you have to learn first. So be ready to be taught by someone else.

Advantages of trying many things

You’ll have to step outside of your comfort zone with the target of learning about another genre of photography to become more creative. You’ll learn something valuable by doing that every time. When you buckle down and focus on something really different, it will give you an opportunity to review techniques, composition, metering, and shooting of different genres. So, don’t be afraid to try many things because it makes you more experienced and creative.

To sum it up, you have to try many types of photography to find your niche. Your photography world grows according to your niche and evolves over time. Be confident to determine the type of photography that you really enjoy and forget the rest of it. You don’t have to master it all.
