Introduction

This story is for the Vocal "Tall Tail" Challenge which you can read about below.

This is the tale of Jackson also known as "The King Of The Cats In 'Nam" or "The Great Catsby" it will be a monologue recited by him, as being The Great Catsby he is eloquent and can tell a tale and captivate anyone with his words.

The Great Catsby - King Of All Cats In 'Nam

The Story of The Great Catsby

I am self-made, I was what the humans call a stray but I always knew what I wanted and what I could get and who I could be. With my golden fur I could have been the Lion King (had I been a little taller and bulkier but I am still the most amazing success).

People and fellow felines look at me and treat me with the awe and respect that I deserve, I am The Great Catsby and The King of all Cats In 'Nam.

I found some humans who actually measured up and they give me the freedom that I need and allow me the best food possible. I do love gourmet food and my humans know that and make sure that I am properly pampered.

This does cause a little jealousy with some of the Cats In 'Nam but they know I will always share my food and toys with them, and this often results in some big parties, and no one goes away with anything but a smile on their face.

A Portrait Of The Great Catsby

I do like to pose for humans and for the other Cats In 'Nam and my photographs and images are shared and admired throughout the land and around the world.

Of course, I can have any kitty that I so desire but my taste is only for the very best, but I do love and show love to all the cats in my wonderful kingdom, you have to care and share to garner respect from others, and I do command that respect.

My preferred music is lively trad jazz, something that you can dance to, especially when trying to court and impress the ladies, and I am always successful in that, but only with single ladies. If a lady is married or has a partner then they are definitely off limits for The Great Catsby.

I have travelled far and wide in the car of my humans, but I would never run off, I have them trained very well and am not so stupid as to think the grass would be greener elsewhere.

My life is perfect and everyone knows it. As the Aristocats say, I make everyone, even humans, wish that they were a cat.

I have been to Buckingham Palace and met the King but I put him in his place, telling him about all the castles that I had on my doorstep in Newcastle. I am welcome in Cragside, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Chillingham and Warkworth as well as in every stately home you can think of.

I really am Cat Royalty although I have not met a cat of my standing, although The Lion King might come near to me.

So this is just a little glimpse in to the incredible life of The Great Catsby and if you do wander the streets of Fenham there is a tiny chance that you might be graced by my presence.

You may have met many cats in your life, but until you have met The Great Catsby the feline encounters in your life are missing something truly special.

It's a nice play on the Great Gatsby. I do wonder if catnip is illegal in 'Nam, and if there's a heavy law prohibiting it. It would make sense about why more cats would approach him, especially if he has what all of the cats are looking for. Another thing I'm thinking of is the male cat patrolling its territory from one of "The Sandman" episodes that had babies with the female cat trying to literally herd cats to tell them to have a bigger, better, dream. As for the Lion King, Mufasa might be forgiving, but I don't think Shere Khan would be as lenient.

Strong start, I love the song “Everybody wants to be a cat” from the movie The Aristocats and it only went up from there! The Lion King reference was a great add, not to mention the most appropriate of punny names for your work! It honoured what I remember of the book and movie so well. Although, I should mention that I haven’t read the book since high school and I can’t tell you how long ago that was! I also love that this story is inspired by a real cat, makes it so believable and fun! I often think about what my 3 cats would say if they could talk! You did such a great job building a relatable and believable character in Jackson.
