What Common Mistakes

Common Mistakes That Most Dog Parents Make

Even the most compassionate and supportive animal parents quite often make mistakes that can cause a great deal of trouble for them as well as for their pet. Most of the time, that's just because they may not have all the information they need. One way to ensure that your dog enjoys a long, happy life is to mitigate the risks of the most common pet-parenting mistakes:

Forgetting Preventative Care

Make sure to take veterinary appointments for more than just sickness and emergencies. Preventive care is as much a part of pet health as it is for human health, so be sure to invest in it. This involves, for instance, immunizations, spaying and neutering, and flea and tick prevention. You can also buy Vetscan Flex4 rapid test kits to diagnose a tick or flea borne diseases in 8 minutes.

Relying Too Much On Treats

Treats are great if your dog is a food-lover. They are also pretty helpful when your pet starts training. But be sure to change the treats with praise, toys, or games. If you will depend too much on treats, your dog may only perform the good behavior when you have goodies with you. Since you won't always walk around with a pocket full of dog food, so make sure your pet responds to admiration and match your approval with rewards.

Not Having Consistent Rules

Another huge mistake is not to have the same rules for your dog. You can permit your dog to stay in bed, but your family member may often scold them for it. As a consequence, your dog will be puzzled and will not understand how they are supposed to behave. Sit down with the whole family and make some of the golden principles for your pet that you and your family member must follow.

Not Continuing Socialization

Good socialization and habituation can help to prevent the behavioral issues that arise from fear. Spend time getting used to all the things that are going to be part of their new life and keep them all exciting and stress-free for your pet. You need to train them that all of these things are safe and fun.

Being Harsh To The Dog

As a new addition to the family, it is possible that your new dog will take time to adjust and in the process engage in some misbehavior. In such cases, instead of screaming at them, find a better and calmer way to show the dog why the particular activity is wrong. Dogs get used to things quickly on their own, and screaming at a dog can make them anxious and angry.

Rather than reacting impulsively to the troublesomeness of the dog, try to say "No," "Sit" or "Calm Down" command to prove them that their actions are wrong.

Allowing Dogs To Start Bad Behaviors By Allowing Undue Freedom

We sometimes become quite liberal to our dogs and permit them to do anything, whether they take food from the dinner table or sleep on the same bed with you. This makes a dog more constant to such habits, and they will always want to eat and sleep with you alone. This is a habit, although it may seem cute at first, that is actually perceived negatively by most pet loving people.

Many common emergencies and problems experienced by dogs are actually caused by humans. Owners either don't pay attention or just don't know that their actions are harmful (such as giving human drugs to dogs without the prescription from a vet). If you have a question about anything, please ask your vet before you do it.
