Common Skin Problems In Cats And Dogs

Skin disorders in dogs and cats can occur in various parts of the body, such as skin, fur, ear and nails, depending on each individual etiology. To determine the causes of illness, medical tests, physical examinations and history of prior exposure to the environment needed for accurate diagnosis. Some of the common skin problems in pets include:

Ticks And Fleas :

Keeping up-to-date about your pet's preventive medications for ticks and fleas is important, so your cat has the best opportunity to fend off any bugs that are tempted to lock on their skin or fur.

Preventive remedies for ticks and fleas operate by spreading the blood system on the skin of your animal. For any ticks or fleas that bite your pet's skin, the parasite absorbs the blood and kills the chemical solution.

If you see one or two fleas, it's possible that tens and hundreds of fleas are already present in your pet's everyday environment, so it's important to monitor your home regularly and wash your bed to remove the parasites.

If your pet is suffering from a tick borne disease then you can also order the VETSCAN Canine Flex4 Rapid Test kit, easy-to-use, flexible, visual rapid test, for the qualitative detection in pets.

Hot Spots

Hot spots often appear slightly as a distinct, moist patch of hair loss on your pet's skin that is very itchy and sometimes smelly. Hot spots can be caused by anything that irritates your pet's skin, from infections and flea bites to allergies and injuries. Pets often chew and lick repeatedly on the affected region, inducing more infection and itching.

Environmental And Food Allergies :

Pollen, dust and mold are three common allergens that can cause cat skin conditions. Your veterinarian will be able to assist you decide if this is a problem for you. It's better to keep your pet away from places filled with pollen, dust and mold. Before allowing them to return to such places, take all appropriate measures to clean them thoroughly.

Skin disorders are one symptom of food allergy. Cats who also have digestion problems, such as vomiting or diarrhea, may also have skin problems as another danger sign.

Abscess:

Abscesses are one of many common pet skin problems. Abscess is a painful mass of pus at the site of a bite or puncture. Abscesses form a hard swelling that becomes soft over time and can burst and disperse pus discharge. While most pet-related abscesses are located in the forequarters or abdomen of a pet, they can often occur near the tail if a pet gets bitten when trying to escape. The easiest way to avoid abscesses is to keep your pet indoors.

Acne :

Some pets, like some human beings, are tragic enough to suffer from acne. The condition in pets is usually mild, and because pets do not worry about their appearance, the illness rarely causes serious problems. However, if your pet has any skin changes, you should schedule an appointment to see your vet – sometimes a skin disease may be a sign of something more dangerous.

Alopecia:

Shedding or hair loss is called alopecia and is a common issue in pets. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent. However, the skin can always look normal or have redness, rashes, bumps, scabs or skin loss. The blood test will decide if the hair loss is caused by a hormonal or thyroid imbalance. Additional tests are required to rule out cancer or other medical problems. Hair loss can be the symptom of many causes, like stress, and there are treatment options for certain disorders, but some cases of alopecia may not have any treatment available.

Your pet's regular check-ups are a perfect chance to speak to your veterinarian about your pet's skin prevention techniques. And if your pet has signs of skin disease, your veterinarian will diagnose the cause and work with you to create a course of treatment that will get your pet back on track with healthier skin as fast as possible.
