My whole life, I would always tell people I was a cat person. I was dead set on it. It wasn't until I was gifted my very first German Shepherd puppy that my mind changed forever.

Baby Hendrix

He was the cutest and sweetest little guy I had ever seen in my life. I fell in love with him immediately. His name was Hendrix. He and I were inseparable.

When I was sad or upset, he would always try and comfort me. He never left my side and he even protected me from harm a couple of times. I will always consider him my very best and loyal friend. He was my protector.

Hendrix is the reason I love dogs so much now; especially German Shepherds. I will always consider them to be my all time favorite breed and I definitely do not see that changing.

There will never be a time where I don't miss him. He is always in my thoughts and I will forever cherish the memories him and I made together.

In honor of my best buddy, here are five fun facts about GSDs that you may or you may not know. Enjoy!

Orgin of the German Shepherd Dog.

The GSD originated in Germany in the late 1800's. They were created by an ex Cavalry Officer, Max Von Stephanitz whose main goal was to create a working dog for herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators. In 1908, the GSD was officially recognized by the AKC as a dog breed and have since then been one of the most popular family dogs around the world.

They are vocal

Because of their herding background, the German Shepherd can be extremely vocal dogs. His loud bark is one of his best weapons for keeping intruders at bay. They will also use different sounds to communicate how they feel to you; so pay close attention!

They shed...A lot!

This is definitely no secret to many. German Shepherds shed all year round. Twice a year they shed their thick, dense fur under their top coat. This is otherwise known as an undercoat. In order to keep this under control, make sure to keep your fur baby properly groomed.

Pssst! Make sure to get a really good vacuum too. A broom isn't always going to cut it anymore.

My #1 recommendation for grooming here.

German Shepherds are big film stars!

Now a days, there have been many movies with GSD's starring as the main character such as the 2017 war drama "Megan Leavy". Based on a true story, this film is about a young Marine Corpal whose bond with her Military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq.

We can't talk about German Shepherds or them being film stars without mentioning the famous Rin Tin-Tin!

Rin Tin-Tin made his first appearance on screen in the 1923 film, "Where the North Begins". The success of the film was big and it has even been credited with saving Warner Bros from bankruptcy. The film was followed by 24 more screen appearances.

They are protective, loyal and loving family dogs.

They can be gentle companions and family protectors with proper socialization and training. German Shepherds love to be close to their pack so it doesn't come as a surprise that they will always follow you around wherever you go. This also means that you may not have any more privacy taking a shower or using the bathroom either as a result! They seem to have to be within close proximity to you at all times. Personally, it doesn't bother me one bit!
