When you feel like you are walking through life on a tightrope, every little movement seems so unsteady. Over what appears to be a deep, never ending, dark endless chasm below. You are stranded in the middle, knowing that behind you is the past and what lies before you is an uncertain future. The fear inside freezes you in time and sometimes makes you unable to move. Thoughts run through every inch of your body. You know you don’t ever want to move backwards, but there are moments you wouldn't mind living over again. Not the painful ones but the beautiful ones. Ahead of you can be just as scary as looking back. We want to be positive and see the light at the end of the tunnel but it seems like the light has been turned off due to lack of payment. With every gust of wind or unsteadiness on our part we risk falling. Falling off the tightrope and being washed away into the abyss below.

We try to steady ourselves believing that we can and will make this journey across but doubt and confusion are ever present. It stops us in our tracks. The sensible mind says “There is nothing to fear but fear itself” the frightened mind says “I can’t do this.” Seeming like a never ending journey, we begin to question the journey itself, asking all the pertinent questions like “Why am I here?” “What am I doing?” “Am I right or wrong?” “Can I do this-should I do this?” No answers are to be found yet. Time and patience are friends and all will be revealed in time. When you suddenly come to the realization that you do indeed have choices, that is where the true journey begins. The choices are many and require thought for each of them. Now we begin to think, analyze and take control.

*Choice one is to give up and step off the rope. Throw up your hands and admit defeat.

*Choice two is to slowly walk backwards. Not really an option for most. Certainly not for me. I haven’t to this point and going back is not the way I am choosing to go.

*Choice three is to just stand still. Not doing anything. Being stagnant and stale, but with this choice nothing changes and everything stays as is. Frozen in time while life continues around us.

*Choice four is to move forward and face the unknown but to race too quickly to the other side is a falling risk also. One stumble or trip can send you plummeting. Best not to run.

Then you have a moment of clarity. Thinking there may be no other choices, a soft voice whispers “Don’t give up” You feel their hand holding yours, their arms wrapped around you like a warm fuzzy blanket and you now know what you need to do. The only choice that truly makes sense.

*Choice five...One step, one day at a time. Live for the moment and this moment only. No sense worrying about things you have no control over. Think of each new day as a chance to make it better. Know that with the end of each day a new day lies ahead to make a difference. Not all things can be fixed, sometimes it is for the best to let things and sometimes people go. It’s not you giving up and walking away...it’s you caring enough about yourself to do what is best for you. Do for yourself what you have always done for others. Make yourself important.

It may take a long time to completely cross that tightrope but with each step progress is made.

So close your eyes, take a deep breath, clear your mind and take that first step. There is a light at the end and it is being held by someone they call hope.
