Until......

"There are those of us who are always about to live. We are waiting until things change, until there is more time, until we are less tired, until we get a promotion, until we settle down...… until, until, until. It always seems as if there is some major event that must occur in our lives before we begin living." - George Sheehan

There is a time for everything. A time for birth, and a time for death. A time to laugh, and a time to cry. A time to keep something, and a time to throw it away. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, too many of us abuse the likes of time though, or we just simply take it for granted. For some strange reason, we adopt this belief that we have an abundance of time, and there will always be that "right time" in the future to make a certain decision, or to do a certain task or action. We sit back and wait for that "right time", continuing to hold off until we find this complete sense of certainty, comfort, and reassurance. Maybe we just hold back until we have no other option but to complete the task at hand? The funny thing is, we then use time as our excuse to justify why we can't undertake a certain task or action immediately, insisting that we are too busy at present, or there is too much going on right now. The act of refraining from making a decision, or proceeding with a task or action, we better know as being procrastination. Perhaps what we don't know is that procrastination is the thief of time, but if not, we do now! How often do we find ourselves in the position where we have a list of tasks to do, be it at work or just some odd jobs around the home, and that one task that is the least enjoyable of the lot, the most difficult, or the one that takes the longest amount of time, we always leave until last? This particular task may be extremely important, and needs our immediate attention, but because it is a task that isn't much fun, or is mundane and arduous, or just consumes so much time, we refrain from doing it until we absolutely have to. It's a classic case of procrastination, and an overwhelming majority of us are guilty of having taken this approach to tasks and actions at some stage of our life.

The above example of procrastination is bad enough as it is, but the worst form of procrastination we can commit is that in relation to our goals. Although many of us are very unclear about our goals, and we tend to have wishes rather than actual goals with form and solidity, most of us have a picture in mind of what we desire our future to look like, and what we want to achieve. What is the point of having a picture, a wish, or a goal in mind, if we have no genuine ambition to go out and achieve it though? There's no determination, no drive, and no sense of urgency there to achieve them whatsoever, proven by our inaction. Why do so many of us not proceed with the journey towards achieving our goals? Well there's laziness for one, and a lack of willpower to get motivated, and get stuck into some hard work. Then there are some of us who are fearful of entering into the journey, worried that in doing so, we will only end up failing, that we will lose financially, that we will make a fool of ourselves, and that others will judge us for our decisions and actions. Then we have those of us who are influenced by doubt, believing that we don't have the required knowledge, skills, resources, and talent to achieve such success. It's always a case of at least one of these reasons, being laziness, fear, or doubt. In typical human fashion, we go searching for reasons to justify and explain why we won't proceed on the journey towards achieving our goals, and the life we desire, at this present time. That becomes the moment we throw in the good old "now is not the right time", or "maybe in the near future", or "I'm too busy right now", or "I have to focus on other things at the moment". We use time as our perfect scapegoat, when the truth is, our real issue is we are either fearful, doubtful, or just plain lazy, to embark on the journey towards achieving our goals.

So why do we use time as our perfect scapegoat? We do so in order to feel better about ourselves, it's as simple as that. We want to create sufficient reasoning behind why we won't proceed with our goals pursuit at this point in time. We don't want to view ourselves, or have others perceive us, as being cowardly and weak, because we are controlled by our own fears. We don't want to view ourselves, or have others perceive us, as being lazy, because we can't be bothered getting stuck into the hard work and effort that comes with the actions that lead us towards achieving our goals. We don't want to view ourselves, or have others perceive us, as being incapable and unskilled, because we are filled with self doubt. Therefore, we pass the blame on time. We literally talk ourselves into believing that there will be a better time, or a right time, in the future. If we simply wait until......! Until what exactly? Until that perfect time that we envisage in our mind, even though it actually doesn't exist? It's like we believe that we won't be as busy in the future, we won't have other things on our mind, and we will have time spare, but circumstances rarely ever work out like that. There will always be something going on in our life, plenty of activities and tasks that will continually inundate us with things to do, and things to concern us. There is a right time for everything, but as far as the pursuit of our goals is concerned, that time is now! We are on borrowed time. We don't know how much time we have in our future, so why are we holding back on using the present time to be creating the life we desire, and be working towards achieving our goals? There will never be a perfect time! The more we procrastinate and delay ourselves from progressing forward, the less time we are giving ourselves to achieve our goals, and experience success. Opportunity is before us every single day, it's just a matter of how much we truly want a better life for ourselves, that will determine whether we will move forward or not with these opportunities. It's fair enough that there will be big decisions that require some careful thought, consideration, and evaluation before we decide to move forward with something, because the last thing we want to do is rush into an opportunity without first having an action plan in place, or perhaps having done some research. The problem for most of us though here is that we don't actually use this time to seriously consider an opportunity, nor do we use this time to research further, nor do we use this time to devise an action plan.

How many times do you hear people say "I'll think about it"? Perhaps you say it a lot yourself? It gives the impression that one is at least interested, when in all fairness, it really is just a polite way of saying, "no thanks, I'm not interested in moving forward". Many people are genuinely interested in such an opportunity, but opt to think about it purely because of the three headed monster attacking their mind, being fear, doubt, and laziness. They don't proceed forward at the time, but leave the door open, as it were, to making a decision. Just because the answer of "no" wasn't given at the time, doesn't mean that the result isn't just that! Thinking over a decision about an opportunity remains as a "no", and a "not proceeded with", until there is a decision, followed by a subsequent action, that involves moving forward. By all means, with big decisions, potentially life changing and risky ones, take a couple of days to seriously consider your options, but do yourself a favour and put some closure on it either way. Stop procrastinating over decisions, and start being more bold and firm! Stop waiting "until" this happens, or "until" that happens, before you finally start working on the actions that are progressing towards your goals. Start now! Because, UNTIL you do, you will be starving yourself of the success, happiness, satisfaction, and prosperity that you desire so greatly in life.
