In criminal law self-defense is no crime. It is a justification for visiting serious bodily harm on another person on the ground that the injury was inflicted as a means of protecting oneself. The right to defend oneself is established by legal jurisdiction in many regions. However, the interpretation of the use of force in times of danger varies widely across countries and communities.

I am starting this article this way in a bid to assure readers that it is lawful to impose a wound on an attacker. In general, not even harm that leads to death is considered criminal… when the defensive killer reasonably believes that he is in imminent danger of losing his life from an assailant, or of suffering serious bodily injury, and that killing the assailant is necessary to avoid the peril. This skill therefore is one that everybody should acquire to make their lives safer on a daily basis.

No matter where you live or work you are at a risk of becoming a victim of a violent or intrusive crime. The one perfect way to deal with it is to defend yourself with certain psychological, physical and self-defense tools. Everyone is entitled to feel safer, and self-defense provides the tools to achieve that. Just as academic education is important for our future so also is self-defense crucial for our safety.

The countermeasure of self-defense is not limited to personal safety. It could also include one’s household, property, family members and cash.

The first step towards it is fitness. Learning self-defense through fitness is of prime importance as there are tremendous power imbalance and safety concerns in many communities today.

The use of physical force to counter personal attack or an attack of violence falls into two categories- armed and unarmed. The chances of successfully warding off an attack depend on many factors, but it is highly related to the extent of severity of the attack and the mental ability and physical skill of the person warding off the attack.

Self-defense builds confidence in you when you are faced with dangerous and intimidating situations. You are able to back yourself with confidence and knowledge in an unfavorable scenario rather than resorting to shaking and freezing before your attacker. The techniques help you to avoid someone overpowering or harming you.

There are a wide range of self-defense techniques, both armed and unarmed. While the armed category involve the use of weapons and firearms as protective measures, requiring the user to have basic handling skills and conform with legal regulations on the possession and use of firearms, the unarmed class is the most widely used form. And it is the focus of this article.

The techniques of combat are codified by traditions and systems and are practiced for many reasons. Some of the most common reasons are for competition, entertainment, fitness, health, physical development and of course self-defense. There are no rules guiding street attack. A self-defender must use whatever he or she has at reach- a handbag, a keychain, shoe metal heels or any implement that can inflict some pain and damage.

Experts agree that for women in the face of an attack striking the groin with a hard thrust of the knee while putting the force of your palm under the attacker’s chin is one of the most effective techniques of self-defense. It is tried and proven and it allows time for one to run or screen for help where that may be necessary. Other fast and effective methods are the use of the fingernails. It can cause massive damage when thrust into the eye of an attacker. Biting the attacker’s hand hard enough to cause pain is yet another technique.

There are various kinds of defense activities. One of it is kickboxing. It is a great cardiovascular workout and one of the best forms of martial arts offering a good fitness streak for anyone who gets into it. Exercise and fitness are the first focus in this program. Karate is another. Whichever activity you chose three things stand important:

1. De-escalation

2. Disengage

3. Defend

De-escalation will look different depending on what the attacker wants, but it comes down to doing what you can to safely leave a situation without having to fight.

Disengage: When you are walking and you suspect someone is following you maintain a distance between the two of you. Also plan and prepare your escape route. Take off high heels, jewelry and other items that restrain your movement. Escaping may just be the appropriate self-defense in that scenario.

Constantly practice disengagement moves: Even with the best de-escalation tactics you might be put in a situation where you have to defend yourself physically. Constant practicing helps you to maintain the knowledge and skill you have and possibly improve upon them.
