True Love

Undoubtfully, affection is the most precious thing in human life. Affection integrates two people in a way, couples share their problems, things, situations with each other. When you feel bad, your couple is revealed in your mind as the first option for recovering yourself. You cannot provide a true love or true relationship by seeking benefit or profit. Love can be described as a strong bond between people. A True relationship will make a person happy above all other aspects of life. In this article, we see the affection between two people in The Gift of Magi.

The Gift of Magi is a short story by O.Henry, this story portrays a strong affection. The story concerns James and Della a young couple who though their penniless try to give each other an elegant gift. Della is a young housewife and she has gorgeous hair, James is Della's husband who is responsible for supporting himself and his wife on a meager income. They decided to buy a Christmas gift for each other. However, Della has not enough money, though she has been putting pennies aside. Everything had cost more than she had expected. It always happened like that. Therefore, Della decides that sell her hair to buy an elegant platinum watch chain for James's watch. Later, Della talks to herself “If Jim doesn’t kill me,” she said to herself, “before he looks at me a second time, he’ll say I look like a girl who sings and dances for money. But what could I do—oh! What could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents?”.

On the other hand, James sells his watch which has a remembrance for his to buy a set of fancy combs for his beauty and valuable wife. Moreover, before James give the gift to Della James said that “I want you to understand me, Dell,” he said. “Nothing like a haircut could make me love you any less. But if you’ll open that, you may know what I felt when I came in.” When they give their gifts to each other, the couple realized that they both sacrificed their most beloved possessions to buy a gift. The James Dillingham Youngs were very proud of two things which they owned. One thing was Jim’s gold watch. It had once belonged to his father. And, long ago, it had belonged to his father’s father. The other thing was Della’s hair. The gifts were valuable, but neither Della had hair nor James had a watch anymore. They described the situation to each other. They know that their love between them is never related to concrete objects like a watch and hair. James tells Della that he will love her no matter how her hair looks, and so the infinite affection between couples is truly revealed.

To sum up, The gift of the Magi represents generoristiy, love and affection with a strong sense. The story concludes with the narrator describing the magi who invented the art of giving Christmas presents. He compares Della and Jim to these wise men and concludes that these two are the wisest of all those who give gifts. This story shows us people can love each other without noticing their cons. Once a strong affection is created between couples nothing could affect this situation. Love is not a game or competition, when you start to feel love, you can truly feel this emotion with all of your aspects. You always stand with your couple either dark or good day. True love entails far more than just feelings. True love never, ever dies. True love always guards, always hopes, and always perseveres.
