Spencer Dinwiddie - Brooklyn Nets

You only get one chance to make an excellent first impression. Spencer Dinwiddie has been one of the few NBA players to defy this common notion. The 6'4 combo guard has always had to work his way up the depth chart. Selected in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, with the 38th pick by the Detroit Pistons.

Dinwiddie played two seasons with Detroit. Spencer was traded to the Chicago Bulls in the 2016 offseason. Dinwiddie got released twice by the Bulls. The final time on October 21, 2016. Spencer later signed a three-year - 2.9-million-dollar contract with the Nets on December 8, 2016.

Over the next three NBA seasons. Nets fans enjoyed watching Dinwiddie's development led to a jump in his scoring average from 7.3 to 12.6 per game. Spencer's growth also help lead the Nets during its short playoff run in the 2017-18 season.

Dinwiddie finished the 2018-19 season with a scoring average of 16.8 per game on 44.2% field goal shooting. The combo guard also added 4.6 assists and shot 33.5% from three-point range.

The Nets rewarded Dinwiddie with another three-year deal worth 34.3 million dollars. At eleven million a season, the Colorado alum received a pay raise for his lasting impressions on the court.

Dinwiddie suffered a devastating ACL injury to his right knee during the Nets' third game. Thus, ending Spencer's 2020-21 NBA season. As Brooklyn acquired James Harden from Houston. The Nets gradually developed their team chemistry. Brooklyn went onto win sixteen out of their last eighteen games.

An interesting debate has started to brew among Nets fans. Whether to trade Spencer Dinwiddie before this year's NBA trade deadline. Here are the pros & cons for each scenario:

Pro: Use Dinwiddie Trade to get extra bench help or future assets.

Despite his injury, Dinwiddie's value in the NBA is still high. Several teams would like to get the combo guard. The Nets could flip Spencer for a backup big man. The franchise could get another perimeter defender for this year's playoff run. Brooklyn could also make a deal to pick up a good young rotation player. Along with a first-round pick or a couple of second-round draft selections.

Con: Dinwiddie can opt-out & become a free agent at the end of the season.

Suppose the Nets decide not to trade Dinwiddie before the NBA trade deadline. The Colorado alum can opt-out of his current three-year contract. Becoming an unrestricted free agent in the 2021 offseason. If Spencer chooses to walk away from Brooklyn. The Nets will not receive any compensation. Thus, Brooklyn would miss an excellent opportunity to gain assets for Dinwiddie's departure.

Pro: The Nets can trade Dinwiddie before next season's trade deadline.

Suppose Dinwiddie decides to opt-in for the final season of his current contract. Both sides could gain from having Spencer play in the early part of the 2021-22 season. Thus, further increasing his trade value for a deal before the 2022 NBA trade deadline. This high-risk, high reward strategy would need a lot of trust on both sides. This scenario could help Dinwiddie's career and the Nets organization's future development.

Con: Dinwiddie could become frustrated with the team & demands a trade, or his trade value falls.

Or Dinwiddie could opt-in for next season. With Irving, Harden, Harris, Shamet, and Brown in the rotation next season. Dinwiddie could become the odd one out on Coach Nash's bench. In this unfortunate scenario, Dinwiddie could become frustrated and ask to leave Brooklyn. Spencer could also struggle in his return to the court. Thus, decreasing his trade value for the Nets during the 2021-22 NBA season.

Several intriguing team storylines are surrounding the Brooklyn Nets this season. The organization's current direction rests on GM Sean Marks. His decision about the talented combo guard could impact the team for years to come. The growing debate about the future of Spencer Dinwiddie will continue to happen. The NBA trading deadline concludes on March 25 at three p.m. when Brooklyn must make their final decision.
