The Moth

From Darkness into Light

Another mundane day at work. You'd think working in a remote camp there would be boundless wildlife everywhere, right? Wrong. Camp is full of the hustle and bustle of workers hurrying about getting ready for work. A large compressor station drones in the background. Vehicles roar up and down the road. These factors make the odd deer on the road, or the occasional bear wandering near the fence a rarity. One day blends in to another. Complacency sets in. Routine and time deadlines consume all thought and physical energy.

Stepping outside on the way to the garbage bin, a small brown moth greets my sight. This is surprising, as Spring comes late to this area. The tree have not yet burst out with leaves. Nordegg is situated in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies in David Thompson region. Nights are cold. Most mornings the rig matting is coated with frost. Today, which is the early part of May, a steady snowfall is happening outside as I sit in front of my keyboard.

The change in weather makes me reflect on the changes that have occurred in my life. May is my birth month. Soon I will have reached my fiftieth birthday. I am more aware of the passage of time more than I once did. Grey hair, extra pounds, and a few new aches and pains are now the norm. Children have grown up and become adults with lives of their own. People I know have passed away. Friends have moved and become out of touch. There's still so many goals unaccomplished, new ideas to try and explore, family to reach out to, bridges to mend.

Metamorphosis: Becoming the Person I Was Meant To Be Published on October 8, 2015 Kath Neal

Moths undergo changes as well. In Native American culture, the moth symbolizes transformation and transition. Complex metamorphosis consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. There are some interesting factors involved in complex metamorphosis. First, moths belong to the Lepidoptera Family. Members of this family have a hard exoskeleton. In order to grow, they have to break this barrier and leave it behind to keep growing. Secondly, the Pupal Stage, is a stage of complete inactivity. The moth neither moves nor eats during this time. The moth has wings, but they are inside its body and not visible. The last stage, the adult stage, has the most radical change of all. This is when the wings are visible on the outside of the moth's body and it becomes a mature adult. The winged creature on the loading dock rail bares no resemblance to the caterpillar it was originally. The moth became a completely new being.

Symbolism and spirituality also have moths playing important roles. Moths are nocturnal, yet they are always drawn to and searching for the light. Moths are perseverant and steadfast in pursuit of this goal. Nothing deters them from striving for what they seek. On a cautionary note, moths blind pursuit sometimes cause them to be burned. This serves a reminder to examine all factors in seeking out ambitions. Light has always been the indicator for good. Moreover, light signals an awakening of truth, and an attainment of goals. Positivity and resolve make what I strive for turn into reality.

Looking at the moth makes me remember that it's never too late to emerge from my cocoon. Certain parts of my life have to be left so that new ones can be gained. I can shed all the excuses that hold me back: I'm too old, I don't have enough money, I won't get hired. Just as the moth emerges step by step to its present state, I can reach my goals by taking one day at a time. Wings only unfold after evolution and growth.
