The Startup Years I first heard the word “beast” in Julian’s living room. It was the fall of 1995, and I had just made up my mind to start my own company. The software consultancy I’d been working for was clearly failing, and if I wanted to keep earning a living by writing code, I had two options: learn C++ or become my own boss.
