It’s hard to be ready for the quiet sadness that comes when you drift away from someone who used to be your best friend.

It’s not like a breakup. There’s no big argument or clear ending, just a slow drifting apart that feels confusing and maybe painful too.

You reply less often. They don’t reach out as much. You both say you’ll catch up soon, but soon turns into months. Before long, you’re just people who share old memories. Sad right?

For a long time, I saw this as a failure. I wondered if I hadn’t tried hard enough or if I had changed too much. But over time, I learned that friendships change, just like the seasons. Some last for years, while others are special for a while and then end when their time is up.

And that’s very okay.

We often think friendship should last forever, no matter what. But life changes. We move, grow, heal, and change, and sometimes the people who once fit into our lives just don’t anymore.

It doesn’t mean anything went wrong. It just means your paths have slowly gone in different directions.

It’s like a tree. Some branches grow close together for a long time, reaching for the same sunlight. Then, one day, they start growing apart suddenly. They haven’t stopped growing, yes, they’re just reaching for their own light now.

Friendships work the same way.

I used to hold on tightly to every friendship, afraid that letting go meant losing love. But love doesn’t disappear when connection fades; it simply changes form.

Sometimes, love looks like space. It can mean wishing someone well from afar, or remembering the laughter, the comfort, and the late-night talks, and choosing gratitude over bitterness.

It took me time to accept that not every friend is meant to stay forever.

Some are there for just a part of your life, teach you something, and then move on. Their leaving doesn’t make those times any less important. There’s a kind of peace that comes with this understanding.

You stop trying to force something that isn’t working. You stop worrying about why things changed.

You start to appreciate what you had, without needing it to happen again. Sometimes, life surprises you. The friend you lost touch with years ago might come back into your life, not the same as before, but renewed. At other times, they remain a beautiful memory, a part of who you used to be. Either way, there’s love in both holding on and letting go.

So, if you’ve lost a friend lately or feel distance growing between you and someone close, don’t be discouraged. It doesn’t mean you failed, really. It just means life is moving forward for both of you.

Love isn't about holding onto other people tightly.

It’s about allowing others to grow, even if that growth takes them in a direction away from you.

That’s love, too, the kind that lets go instead of holding on…
