NEW DRAFT - Yes I CAN! 💪🏾
My name is Shanika Jones AKA Nika Boo. I am a 30 year old independent, determined young adult who has conquered many trials. I was diagnosed with Lupus at the age of 14, 2 years after losing my mother. Upon beginning high school, I was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Scleroderma, Sarcoidosis, and Reynaud's Disease. Despite my health issues and numerous hospital stays, I was able to complete and graduate high school and attended WSSU for 2 years. Although I didn't graduate, I managed to get a job at the Forsyth County Department of Social Services for 2 years, along with a few part time jobs, and worked as a summer camp counselor at my church.

Hidden Talent
Sheryl sat on the park bench doing her favorite activity, people watching. She smiled as two people held a child’s hand and swung her as they walked through the green grass. She watched as the couple laying on a picnic blanket laughed at something the other had said. The jogger who stopped to lean against the tree and take a swig of water from his bottle that had condensation dripping from the outside of it.

The Monastery
When a person is confronted with a situation that will change his life forever, that person must face it alone, and begin to prepare. Within less than a second, I became such a person. The months leading up to the day of induction was exhausting. For the first year I was in a daze. Then I knew that to survive my penance I would have to place my mind in an alternate reality and create a barrier so that I could function but not surrender to the machine. Many powerful men have come here before me; some learned and moved on to better things. Others sat still until their light was dimmed forever. There are many secrets within these walls. I am Monkish and this is the Monastery.

Chasing Sunsets...
By trade, I am an educator, a champion for students, someone cheering them on, every child needs a champion. When students come to school at an early age, no one has to teach them to be creative. Creativity rushes out of their very being, the imagination runs wild on their blank canvas. I was no different at that age. My childhood was as normal as my single parent mother could make it and filled with love and support. There were mistakes along the way, traumas that I experienced, the struggle to fit in and be accepted for who I was, the unanswered questions, and what we would label today as depression.

Where Are the Cookies?
There’s a phenomenon that’s familiar to people who grew up with people who lived through the Great Depression, and among some Asian-American families. It isn’t exclusive to those groups, of course, as no generalization fits neatly into human categories, so the odds are pretty good that no matter where and how and with whom you grew up you will recognize it, and may personally suffer from it. It’s called Butter Cookie Tin Syndrome, or BCTS for short. I totally made that up, but the phenomenon is real.

Changing the Conversation
Sitting in my bed binging on whatever movie channel subscription I could find and hiding from life for 2 days I decided "I'm Done". The next thought was, what does "I'm done actually mean?". It was a dark time in my mind. For the past 60 days I had a string of bad luck. When I thought what could possibly go wrong next, something completely unexpected would happen. Every area that I thought was in my control I learned was not. I've lived through hell before but this was a different feeling. What is my mind telling me when it summarized my thoughts in the statement of "I'm Done".
