A Mother to Many

Sonya Boomer Owner and Founder of 3M Dance Studio Where Jesus Is Lord

Years ago it was spoken over her life that she would be the mother to many children across the nation. Maybe then she had no clue how that would happen, but now day by day I see those words become the very essence of who she is.

Sonya C. Boomer has been dedicated to instilling the value of life into children for as long as I have known her. So when she told me she wanted to start a dance studio I knew that this was another opportunity for her to do that she was dedicated to doing. She had three reasons; 1 God vision, 2. Leave a legacy for her children 3. To get young girls and boys an outlet. All very selfless reasons.

Through the years, since 2014, I have watched her dedicated herself to the studio. Accepting children whose parents could not afford to pay full tuition or anything. I have seen her cut herself short in order for the children who attended her studio could flourish. She treats all the children order her care with the same love as if they are her own. She has been able to create a safe space for young girls and boys to be themselves and develop a passion. At the end of each season she puts together a recital and makes the children feel like celebrities.

Year after year she put her all into these children giving some of them opportunities they wouldn’t see otherwise. In 2019 she was able to take 11 young dancers to competition, for most of them it was an experience of a life time.

Maintaining a dance studio in a low income community is no easy task and she says often “this is not for the weak.” She fights and is rewarded every time she sees growth and progress in the dancers. The words spoken over her are becoming the beacon of who she is.

Though this is the vision God has given her by no means is she a one man band. She has been able to create a family, a community within a community. We work together, we cry together, and we are rewarded together. She values our input just as much as her own often saying “I know I don’t have all the answers.”

When COVID hit if I could be honest I did not know what would happen. Businesses around us were closing. Studio owner who she looked up to we’re closing. Our parents were nervous, we had a recital we were right in the middle of putting together. Did I mention she had the determination of a roaring lion seeking to devour his prey?

Our city was on lock down and we had no idea if we would be able to win back up. No dwelling on the unknown she decided that we would resume classes online and continue on learning choreography virtually. She felt the dancers deserved it and if they still want to dance she would make a way.

With no word on when our city would open we continued teaching virtually. She worked tirelessly looking for a place we could possibly present our recital. She wanted more than anything for the children, her children, to show what they had worked on so hard in person and virtually.

She never gave up and because of that we were able to find an outside stage. The children were able to perform and I know it will be something they will never forget thanks to the Mother of Many.

Her determination is why she is still able to provide a place for inner-city children. She believes all children should have the same opportunities and this is how she does her part.

Through the years I have watched her change the lives of so many children. I am truly inspired by her will to keep pushing. I am inspired by her humility and the creative ways she continues to provide for her for the children of her community. This is truly Inspiration money can’t buy. Sonya C. Boomer, owner and founder of 3M Dance Studio Where Jesus Is Lord and the mother to many.
