How To Spend Your Quarantime Wisely

Bored? Wasting away? Doing nothing? Let's fix that.

Life’s a bit weird right now and honestly, a lot of us don’t know how to handle this overwhelming boredom of staying home, but for the world’s sake, stay home and calm down! This article can provide some helpful tips for anyone that feels restless, lost, and more. Just take a deep breath and keep reading. Everything will be okay!

First things first: What's your schedule look like?

Have you been sticking to some sort of routine from the none quarantine/social distancing days? Try to remember to keep things as normal as possible when it comes to using your time. You don’t want to come out of this completely lost on how to live when you get back to your job, friends, and daily life!

Here are some ideas of what you could make the extra effort to keep normal while at home:

  • Sleep schedule: This is a biggie guy! If your normal schedule is a 10 pm - 6/7 am sleep schedule, do not disrupt this and create a sleep schedule that happens during the day.
  • Morning/Evening routines: Keep up with that personal hygiene game. Also, this means more than washing your hands. Take showers, brush your teeth, wash your face, etc. regularly!
  • Eating at your typical times! Especially, don’t mindlessly eat out of boredom. That would be a bad habit in the making.
  • Exercise every day if possible. This doesn’t have to mean doing a three-hour sweat session in your personal gym. I mean even just going for a walk, doing some squats or crunches, go for a swim, etc.

Now that you have a constant in your life, let’s add some variety!

I’ve always appreciated the quote “Variety is the spice of life”, but I don’t believe I ever truly understood it until now. I’ve been so anxious trying to figure out what to do with so many jobs canceled, classes moved online, graduation postponed, moving back home until I finished school, etc. The biggest thing that has helped me has been picking up new things to do or trying to get better at what I already know to do.

A couple of things I started were taking online classes outside of school and picking up the hobby of running. Both serve a purpose to help keep my mind and body engaged in the now rather than letting myself zone out to my current reality. For classes, I’ve opted for taking them from Masterclass. I’ve taken classes off and on from this website for a couple of years now and honestly, it’s so worth it. You get taught by literally the best of the best in their fields. One class I’ve loved diving into the most has been the class taught by Shonda Rhimes. There is such a variety of classes that you could learn about space travel one day and screenwriting the next!

Fix up your surroundings while you can.

So, we’re all supposed to be staying home, right? (The only acceptable answers are yes, right, of course, etc. Stay home!) Without a doubt, there are a ton of projects we can tackle while we get this extra required time at home. You can do anything from keeping everything clean to fixing that weird step on your stairs. (Yes, I’m talking to you Phil Dunphys of the world!)

Here are some ideas to get you started on what home projects you could tackle:

  • Do all those laundry and dishes you’ve been putting off
  • Deep clean your carpet or mop your floors
  • Create that DIY furniture you’ve always wanted to have
  • Clean out your shower, sink, and other drains (trust me they do need it)
  • Mow your lawn
  • Pressure wash the driveway and maybe even the outside of your house

Get up and get a move on!

I hope these tips were helpful and that you are able to make it through this with your sanity intact. Also, I just want to say thank you to all of the medical professionals on the front lines working so hard to make sure we get through this with the best possible outcome. You're the real MVPs!

I hope you guys have a lovely rest of the week and let me know if you want more articles about what we can do during this time.
