How to Grow a New Business

Practical Tips for Success

By The Digital HubPublished about a year ago • 4 min read

Building a Solid Foundation

Growing a new business is really difficult, especially if you haven't run one before, but even if you have, I hope you can find some useful tips in this blog. You can always learn something new.

Tip 1 Foundation

I think my number one tip is going to be focusing on building a strong foundation early. Get your business plan together as soon as you can and do thorough research to understand your market. Research your target audience to see what people are looking for and also have a look at all your competitors to see what they're doing well.

From there, you can identify gaps and opportunities where your business may be able to shine. It would also be worth asking your professional network, friends, and family for their experiences. I can understand you might not want them to know exactly what you're doing, so maybe just ask some close family members.

Tip 2 Brand, Marketing, and Visibility

My next tip would be to think about your visibility. There are a few key areas to focus on here:

Building a Strong Brand

Have a really clear brand message and identity and make sure this is consistent across your website, your social media, and your marketing. Position your business to stand out.

Leveraging Digital Marketing

Social Media

Social media is where you can build a lot of awareness and trust. Post frequently, and it's really important to keep up with that brand message. Don't just post about anything. Post about the problems your potential market is facing and how they could solve them. It’s not all about posting your business.

Paid Ads vs. SEO

Paid Ads

There are other aspects of digital marketing like SEO and paid ads. Paid ads are when you pay to put up an ad campaign, for instance, for Google Ads. This is if you want to try and get your service or business out quickly. You're paying Google to display an ad right there and then.

SEO

Then you've also got SEO, or search engine optimisation. This is a long-term strategy. Instead of paying for Google Ads, you're investing in the future. SEO takes a long time, about six to twelve months to see results. Now, if you're just starting out, you might not have the budget for it. A typical agency costs about $2,500 to $5,000 per month for SEO. Over 12 months, that could be about $30,000 per year.

Tip 3 A Smarter Investment: SEO Coaching

One of my best tips is actually investing in SEO Coaching. Instead of paying $30,000 per year for someone to do your SEO for you, you can actually learn through an SEO coaching course where you can have an experienced SEO consultant teach you the fundamentals. So for just an initial investment, you can learn SEO yourself and apply that knowledge to build up your website.

I'm not saying you need to do, SEO, paid ads and social media. You may just want to do one or two things to start out with. This is entirely up to your business and how much time you have.

Tip 4 Networking and Financial Management

Networking

This tip is networking and partnerships. A really good way to do this is going on websites like meetup.com and finding other small business owners and going to networking events. Also, build relationships with other businesses—either similar businesses or even completely different ones. Think about who could refer your work. Statistically, referrals are a lot higher than cold outreach.

Financial Management

My next tip would be to manage your finances wisely. Don't get the most premium software product initially; you might not be ready for it. Why pay $10,000 a month for a software when you're just not ready for it? It might be the best, but potentially look at a software that might have a freemium version for now. You can potentially upgrade or change software in the future.

Always make sure to track your cash flow and expenses from the start. Make sure you get an accounting system like Xero, QuickBooks, or MYOB. You want to see where all your money is going, or where your profits are going, or where your losses are going. Make sure everything is tracked correctly. This can be manageable from the start, or again, you might need to have an initial training session from an accounting firm. Or you could pay them to manage it for you.

Tip 5 Customers, Team, and Data

Customers

Next is putting your customers first. You want referrals, you want happy customers, you want good Google reviews. So try to deliver excellent service to encourage loyalty and long-term clients. Ask for reviews and testimonials where you can put them on your website, especially when potential new clients are asking for this. You can link them directly to your website. You can also turn happy customers into brand advocates and they'll do the selling for you in the referrals.

The Team

Next would be to build the right team. You might be starting off by yourself or you might have an investment where you can start hiring people. Hire people that share your vision, not just anybody. I've spoken to other small business owners that have hired just because of a heavy workload and they have had three people back-to-back who just weren't a good fit because they didn't speak to them, didn't do multiple interviews, and they didn't share their vision. Focus on training and development. Empower your staff to grow the business with you and outsource strategically when needed.

Data

From there, use measuring tools. Make sure you start thinking about your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) right from the start. Use the data to then refine your marketing and operations and be willing to adapt to change. Stay flexible to respond to market changes.

Final Takeaways

Growth comes from consistent smart choices. Focus on your customers, brand, and efficiency, especially when starting out. Think about your costs and investing in your own personal development instead of having to outsource everything immediately.
