what is fear

fear is one of those "bad" emotions that we can use to motivate us to overcome our fears or help us face new fears. When fear is the actual enemy, the emotion of fear serves an evolutionary purpose for our survival. When fear turns into the enemy, less able to recognize it in ourselves and more willing to project it on others and risk experiencing it in dreams or other situations.

Courage on the other hand is a strong emotion that originates in the presence of fear.

Courage is the ability to act even in the face of strong emotions or threats even when there is no need or opportunity to do so. It is the ability to stand up and be in place regardless of how intense or justified the fear is. Both of these emotions can help one be a hero and a leader.

Courage is the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.

One of my closest friends is a retired Air Force fighter pilot. This does not mean he was ever in the military but he certainly has the character of courage. This does not mean he can never be a hero because he was afraid to be a hero during the days of his childhood. He faced his greatest fear...disappearance from this earth. But despite his fear, he persevered and did what was necessary to follow his dream.

strength and hope

What then is the worst enemy? The fear of future enemies? The fear of what others might think of us? Fear of losing control and being abandoned by others?

There are all sorts of answers but I believe courage can teach you how to deal with fear and the worst emotions of it. What is important is that you are still using your own natural-born characteristics of courage, strength, and hope. These are very strong emotions that can propel you to greatness. Corey allows you to tap into these emotions so you can have hope and joy for your personal growth and use them to help you with your own emotional growth.

Let's look at this last statement in more detail. Let's say you feel you are the worst enemy of yourself because you are afraid of losing control. You can do one of two things. You can either try to stay in control and hope others will come around to your way of thinking or you can embrace fear and remain afraid of what others think of you.

Now it doesn't matter if others come around to your way of thinking or not. It doesn't matter if you are right or wrong. What does matter is that you are using your natural-born characteristics of courage and hope in overcoming fear and becoming the best you can be. If you are afraid of yourself and your fears then you won't achieve the greatness you can if you embrace your natural-born characteristics of courage and hope.

So instead of trying to be the best human being you can be, you need to take a step back and try to understand why you became the way you are today.

Ask yourself what qualities of character got you here and are they part of your natural strength and courage? Once you get a clear understanding of who you truly are, you can work on developing the strengths to overcome your enemies. Just remember, fear is not the enemy; it is only a hindrance to those who would like to take over your life.
