Companies Ban Staff From Using Mobile Phones
Overreacting or Much Needed?

I read an article headline in the FT that screamed ‘Companies ban staff from using mobile phones at work’. Yikes. Are employees at school that they can’t use their phones?
Digital Influence
An Always-On culture impacts you more than you think. Over the last couple of decades, we’ve become dependent on the electronic gadgets that seem to have multiplied in our lives, and we’ve started spending more time on them. As technology advances, our digital footprint increases, too.
We’re doing more daily tasks such as work, finance, and banking, as well as communicating with family, friends, and people worldwide at the touch of a button.
Mobile Phone Addiction?
On average, people spend up to 2.5 hours on Social media via their phones daily. Not only are most people glued to their phones, they are plugged in too with AirPods, or headphones.
For some, it can be much longer, depending on their phone use. Thus, it’s hardly surprising that we seem even busier than ever. How active are you on social media, and when are you on social media? What consumes your time? Daniel knew the answer to that question. Too much time is spent scrolling online, especially watching funny videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. He continued to read.
How Does An Always-On Culture Impact You?
Being continuously on social media can lead to both negative and positive outcomes.
Some of the positives include:
❇️Feeling connected with family and friends
❇️Making new connections with other people around the world
❇️an outlet for creativity
❇️Self-expression self-expression
Negative impact
❇️FOMO (fear of missing out)
❇️Checking your phone to see if you have the notifications turned on
❇️Time frittered away
❇️Too much screen time is wrong for your mental and physical wellbeing
❇️Distracted from working on what matters
❇️Inability to switch off
If you’re in the habit of picking up your phone first thing of the day and the last, then you might find relaxing, recharging, or even sleeping a little more challenging. Why? Your brain is still working because it thinks it needs to process information or produce results.
Alternative Way Forward
I believe Companies could look at the following options and see if they would work better.
1. Set Specific Phone-Free Times
Make specific times of the day phone-free, such as during meals, before bed, or work hours. Use this time to focus on other activities or engage with people around you.
2. Use App Limit Features
Use built-in features on your phone that allow you to set limits on app usage. For example, iOS has Screen Time, and Android has Digital Wellbeing. Set daily limits for social media, games, or other distracting apps.
3. Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications
Go through your notification settings and turn off notifications for apps that are not essential. This reduces the number of distractions and interruptions throughout the day.
4. Create a Designated Phone Space
Find a spot in your home or office to place your phone when you don’t need it. This can help reduce the urge to check it constantly. Do not put your phone in your pocket. Why? It’s very easy to pull out the phone and start scrolling aimlessly.
5. Use the Do Not Disturb Mode
Enable Do Not Disturb mode when you need to focus. Use the settings to allow calls or messages from specific contacts if necessary.
6. Engage in Offline Activities
Make a conscious effort to engage in offline activities that you enjoy, such as reading a book, exercising, or spending time outdoors. This helps to break the habit of turning to your phone for entertainment.
7. Mindful Phone Use
Practice mindful phone use by being aware of why you are using your phone. Before picking it up, ask yourself if it’s necessary. This can help you become more intentional and reduce mindless scrolling.
Parting Thoughts
The addictive nature of mobile phones exacerbates the problem. Countless individuals cannot resist the allure of endless scrolling, even when aware of the negative impact on their sleep.
This addiction not only perpetuates the disruption of sleep patterns but also heightens the risk of developing chronic conditions like hypertension.
