There’s this pattern I’ve noticed in my life. I’ve always been that girl who was overlooked, always second, never the first choice. I’ve tried to figure out why I never seem to attract the kind of attention I wanted, and why, even in relationships, I was treated like I didn’t matter. I never received those romantic gestures—no flowers, no surprise gifts, no moments where someone made me feel like I was the one. I was always the person who gave, who offered everything I had, but when it came time for me to receive, I was met with indifference. This isn't something I’ve made up in my head. It’s been a reality for me. People say that we create the patterns in our lives, and maybe there’s truth to that. But I never built this situation. It was never me creating this invisible barrier between me and love. I was simply ignored. The people I liked never seemed to care, while others who didn’t even seem interested in love were always surrounded by options. Take my friend, for instance. She was gorgeous, full of energy, and had a natural charm. Men flocked to her, but she never seemed to care about any of them. She didn’t play games. She didn’t need validation. But she got it, and she got it in abundance. She wasn’t even trying. She was just… herself. And that’s where I started to wonder—what was I doing wrong? Was it that I was trying too hard? Was I too available? Too desperate for attention? I felt like I was performing for others, trying to please, and in doing so, I was only making myself invisible. I would have killed for the attention she got. But I was always the second girl—the one no one chose. It’s like I was just there, not seen, not felt. The worst part? I would hold onto the smallest gestures. If someone opened a door for me, I’d think about it for days. I treated those small things like they were precious, because they were, to me. But to others, they probably didn’t even realize the significance of their actions. I don’t even know how it happened, but somewhere along the way, I started thinking that maybe I could be like her—cold, distant, unbothered by love and affection. Maybe that’s the way to be noticed. Maybe if I acted like I didn’t care, if I became elusive, I’d attract the attention I craved. I wanted to be the kind of woman who didn’t need validation, who could reject men because I was too cool, too free, too in control. But deep down, I knew that wasn’t me. That wasn’t who I was. And that’s when I realized something important. I’ve always been a kind person. That’s my core, my essence. It’s who I am. But here’s the thing—being kind doesn’t make me special. It doesn’t make me different from anyone else. Kindness should be the baseline for humanity. It’s not something to be praised; it’s something we should all practice. And when people would tell me, “I like you because you're kind,” I’d resent it. I didn’t want to be loved just for my kindness. I wanted to be loved for who I truly was—the parts of me that went beyond just being nice. It took me a long time to understand this, but I finally realized that kindness alone isn’t enough. You can be kind, but if you don’t show the world who you really are, if you hide behind politeness and insecurity, people won’t see your true self. The reason I felt invisible was that I was hiding. I was too scared to show my real desires, to ask for what I wanted, to be unapologetic in who I am. I had become too available, too selfless, and in doing so, I made myself small. But I don’t want to be small anymore. I don’t want to shrink for anyone. I want to stand tall in my own truth. I don’t need to be the fiery, distant woman who pushes people away to feel powerful. I want to embrace who I am, the good and the bad. I want to love myself first, even if that means being vulnerable, even if that means being open to love in a way that feels scary. The truth is, I’ve always been the one to give. I’ve always been the one to sacrifice. But now, I’m learning to stop giving so freely without considering my own needs. I’m learning to set boundaries, to protect my heart while still being kind. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary. I want to attract love, but not just any love. I want to attract the love that is genuine, that is reciprocated. And for that to happen, I have to be willing to give myself the love I deserve first. Maybe one day, I’ll be the girl who doesn’t need anyone to prove my worth. Maybe one day, I’ll be the girl who stands tall, not waiting for anyone to notice, but simply shining because I know my own value. Until then, I’ll keep working on myself, becoming the best version of who I am, not for anyone else, but for me.
