Avoid the Generational Slime: Why I Stopped Playing by Their Rules

This one's for anyone tired of explaining why they don’t want what everyone else seems to be chasing.

This post was inspired by a quote I heard in a YouTube video by Amethyst Virgo Astrology. She said something that instantly lit up my spirit:

“Don’t let people create your reality for you.”

Whew. That’s a mini-sermon. I’ve spent the last few years standing on business, batting off projections from family, society, Twitter fingers, and every generational-shaming columnist with an opinion and a platform. The pressure to be impressive, be practical, live a life that's perfectly planned.

Your Life, Your Flavor

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way:

You can’t live someone else’s dream and expect it to feel like freedom.

People will project their truths onto you like gospel, not because they’re malicious, but because they’re scared. They’re still carrying around old narratives from their time, their traumas, and their playbooks for survival. But their path was shaped by rules that may not even exist anymore.

We all have our own mental funk to wash off — the inherited, environmental, psychological kind. And if you keep absorbing everyone else’s beliefs about what’s best for you? You’ll lose the scent of your own clarity.

You’ve got a hand in the kitchen with God.

But you don’t need your uncle, your friend, your old professor, or your coworker reaching in and tossing their ingredients into the pot.

This isn’t a potluck. It’s your recipe. Your timing. Your flavor.

Let the aroma of your life reflect your truth, not someone else’s survival strategy.

Don’t Hand Over the Wheel

You can’t hand people the steering wheel of your life and expect to still feel in control. If you give away the keys, don’t be surprised when the route no longer feels like home.

At some point, you have to learn the difference between someone else’s truth and your own. What’s true for them may have come from survival. From fear. From a time when options were limited and silence felt safer than change.

But you aren’t here to live out recycled fear.

You’re here to write your own chapter — using what you’ve learned, what you value, and what’s calling you forward now.

This is why self-validation is non-negotiable.

Because for every dream you dare to voice out loud, there will be someone ready to push back.

Not always out of hate, but out of habit. Out of fear that your change challenges their comfort zone.

And guess what? That’s not your responsibility to fix.

On Projections, Pressure & Opinions

Let’s be real:

Every generation has had to deal with uncertainty, unexpected change, and outdated beliefs.

What your parents or community needed to survive is not always what you need to thrive.

Take the wisdom. Leave the fear.

Their path can inform yours — but it doesn’t get to define it.

You don’t owe anyone a copy-paste life just to make them comfortable.

You get to choose your subscription in life —

Netflix or Hulu. Silence or self-expression. Comfort or curiosity.

That same freedom extends to your money, marriage, location, parenting, timing, and everything in between.

So if someone forgets that? Feel free to remind them.

With love, but with firmness — and enough volume to tune out their noise… I mean, feedback.

Move Like It’s Yours — Because It Is

You deserve to move through this world freely — without fear, without limitation, and without carrying everyone else’s doubts on your back like debt.

You deserve to think abundantly.

Not just in terms of money or success, but in possibility. In purpose. In presence.

And the first step toward that? Tuning out the noise.

Because when you start trying to account for everyone’s opinions, it’ll leave you second-guessing, spiraling, and stuck.

Motivational Reminder:

Your actions and God’s will are the final say over your life.

Your purpose trumps your family’s projections.

The universe doesn’t take its cues from people who only knew a past version of you.

Once you channel your energy through your willpower, your affirmations, and your consistency, something sacred happens:

Life starts responding in ways you can’t always see but will absolutely feel.

You won’t need constant reassurance when you’re rooted in self-trust.

And you won’t need approval when you’re aligned with your purpose.

Check the Price Tag on Approval

Designing your life also means thinking about the costs.

Not just money — but time. Energy. Peace.

Every yes you say comes with an investment. So the next time you’re deciding something major, ask yourself:

“How much is this going to take from me — and what will it leave me with?”

When Pressure Isn’t Wisdom — It’s Projection

Let’s say your family is pressuring you to buy a house.

They might genuinely believe it’s the best move. But who’s signing that 30-year mortgage?

Who’s paying for property taxes, home repairs, and the emotional cost of feeling stuck in a place that might not even align with your future?

Exactly.

If you're the one making the payments, living in the location, and sacrificing your flexibility, you better make sure it’s your version of “best,” not someone else’s outdated blueprint.

Because when the inevitable frustrations show up — the stress, the cost, the what-if regret — the people who pressured you won’t be the ones living with the consequences. You will.

Because you know what they say about people who ass-u-me... 😅

Let’s Talk About the Slime

This one goes out to the Millennials and Gen Zs who are being spoon-fed the hottest, slimiest, flavorless soup of “success.”

We’re supposed to keep up with the Joneses — but no one can actually tell us who the Joneses are, why we should care, or why their life template is the only valid one.

So here’s your friendly reminder:

F the Joneses.

Create your own blueprint. Design your own family values. Build a lifestyle that feeds you, not someone else's ego.

When I typed the word “slimiest,” I immediately thought of that old Nickelodeon show — the one where people got drenched in green slime for fun.

That’s what some of the older generations are doing to us — dumping their slime (aka projections, fears, outdated goals) onto us and expecting us to smile through it like it’s a badge of honor.

Nah. We’re good. LOL.

So What’s the Real Prize, Anyway?

I couldn’t remember the exact Nickelodeon show, but when I Googled it, turns out the MVP — the winner — was the one who got slimed.

Think about that for a second.

What did they actually win?

A head full of gunk. Clothes ruined. Slowed down from whatever progress they were supposed to be making that day.

You can show up to the same rigged game — racing to win based on outdated, external rules — just to get slimed with stress, shame, or someone else’s version of success.

Or… you can opt out.

You can run your own race, set your own rules, and define your own reward.

Because here’s the real plot twist:

Reality is customizable. Your life? Designed by you.

And that’s not just empowering — that’s revolutionary.
