Speaking in front of an audience does not just mean having a nice presentation in front of a group of people, there's more than that. It is a combination of abilities. You need to know how to control your emotions in stressful situations, to know how to use your nonverbal language, to influence people's opinions, to capture and to pay attention, to tell stories, among other things.

In this article, I will provide you with a list of 9 skills you will gain if you do public speaking.

You get rid of shyness:

When you manage to have a clear and strong presence in front of a group of people, you begin to develop your confidence in yourself and you can take greater risks in interacting with others. Timidity does not exist in people who have a lot of confidence in themselves and public speaking is building this.

You learn to express yourself clearly:

If you want to talk in public at a level of excellence, it is vital to structure your message. If you build up your message in the proper way, people will understand it completely.

You know to speak concisely:

Most of the time you are invited to hold a speech for an allocated time: 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, 30 min, 1h. The discipline of enclosing yourself at that time is essential and helps you express yourself briefly. Today no one wants longer meetings and meetings. Everybody wants to know the essence.

You gain authority:

Public speaking is very useful if you want to build up a personal brand and to be seen as an expert in the field. People perceive the person in front as the person with the most experience, so the way to sell yourself depends on you.

You can promote your products or services to a larger number of people:

When you talk in public, you are 10, 20 maybe 50 times more efficient in sales than when you sell 1 to 1. A huge number of people are listening to you and they can decide to buy from you. That's why public speaking can be one of the strong leverage in sales.

You are networking on the next level:

If you are a speaker at an event, people will treat you differently than they would if you were a participant. They pay more attention, they are more interested in knowing you, and they make more effort to help you.

You get rid of the fear of speaking in public:

When you talk frequently in public, you get rid of this fear, because when you do the same thing very often you are no longer as sensitive and affected by that activity. Practicing often becomes normal for you, just like driving. In this way, breaking one of the strongest fears, the rest will look like nothing else.

You have the chance to become an intern trainer:

If you are part of a medium, large, or corporation, you can go on with internal training. One of the most common things in a company is that the presentations are boring. If you can hold exciting presentations and you are an expert on the area, who do you think they will be asked to undertake the next training?

You can have a major impact on people:

Nothing compares to the satisfaction you have when a participant tells you that you've changed his life. With a good speech, you can do that.

The first time I had to talk in public was a disaster, but the more I did it, the better I became. It's hard until you get used to it only.
