When you’re afraid, do it scared

Sometimes we think we’re being brave when we are, in fact, just being reckless. Fear is natural and healthy—it’s how you know you’re moving out of your comfort zone. The thing is, most people go too far—they let fear take over their lives until it shapes every decision they make. That kind of fear paralyzes them; they become so afraid that they don’t do anything at all.

It gets easier if you do it

One day at a time. One step at a time. There’s no such thing as an overnight success. The people who achieve amazing things do so one day at a time, focusing on one foot in front of another and knowing that every step brings them closer to where they want to be. It’s tempting—especially when you’re going through a hard time—to fall into discouragement, resignation, and hopelessness.

The bigger the change, the more support you need

The more you’re changing, and particularly if it’s a change that can make people uncomfortable, you need more support from your friends and family. It isn’t always easy to know how much support is too much or not enough; people have different thresholds for different kinds of changes. The only way to know for sure is to check with those around you who care about you most deeply (friends, parents, spouse/partner) and ask them what they think.

Don’t wait until tomorrow

It’s great to plan for success, but don’t get trapped waiting for a better day. If you have an opportunity right now, grab it. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, so take that chance while you can. If you don’t try at all, nothing will happen and tomorrow may never come. Success only comes if you actually go after it; don’t be afraid of failure or rejection, just take that chance and live your life on your terms.

Keep going because change is good

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. ~ Barack Obama (born August 4, 1961)

If you can’t beat them, join them!

If you find yourself in a downward spiral of negative thoughts and destructive behaviors, there’s nothing wrong with accepting that you’re battling an addiction or habit. That self-acceptance is key to finding recovery, because it eliminates any guilt for being unable to break free on your own—or shame for feeling like you need external help.

Take it step by step

Keeping it simple helps you get through anything, especially through a trying time. When things seem overwhelming, break down your next steps into small manageable chunks. Doing so will help ease anxiety and make stress easier to manage. Instead of thinking about all that you need to do, just focus on what’s right in front of you and take it one step at a time.

Don’t think about your fears, face them

Facing your fears can seem scary, but you have a lot more control over them than you realize. One of our greatest fears is of failure. This fear has caused us to shy away from our dreams and ambitions. Don’t let it rule your life. Face it, ask questions, research answers, take action and before you know it; your biggest fear will be an afterthought. What are some things that you’re afraid of?
