7 Ways to Bounce Back and Break Out of The Slump
Here is how to get moving again when you feel like you are lacking motivation.
It can be tough to find motivation when you're in a slump. Whether you're feeling low because of a recent personal setback, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or simply because life feels monotonous, it's important to find ways to get yourself moving again.
There are many things you can do to snap out of a funk and start feeling better. Below are five techniques that may help. If you wish to read more about my work, please feel free to check out my website or my Instagram.
1. Find a support group or community
When you're feeling down, it can be helpful to connect with others who understand what you're going through. There are many online communities and forums dedicated to helping people overcome apathy and depression. Just knowing that you're not alone can be a huge motivator in itself.
For example, the website Apathy is Boring has an online forum where people can share their stories and connect with others who are struggling with similar issues.
2. Set small, achievable goals
One of the biggest reasons people become apathetic is because they feel like they're not accomplishing anything. To combat this, set yourself small, achievable goals that you can complete easily. This could be something as simple as taking a brisk walk every day or doing a 5-minute meditation each morning. When you start ticking off these goals, you'll start to get a sense of accomplishment and this can help you regain your motivation.
3. Practice mindfulness and gratitude
In times of apathy, it can be easy to get caught up in negative thoughts about your life or circumstances. However, the best way to combat these feelings is by practicing mindfulness and gratitude. This means focusing on the present moment and being grateful for what you do have instead of dwelling on what's lacking. You can practice mindfulness by engaging in activities like yoga, meditation, journaling, or taking a walk outside. Additionally, try to cultivate an attitude of gratitude by writing down three things each day that you are thankful for. Over time, this will help shift your focus away from negativity and towards positivity.
4. Try new hobbies or activities
Another reason people become apathetic is because they have stopped doing activities that they once enjoyed. When you find yourself feeling unmotivated and apathetic, try picking up a new hobby or activity to reignite your passion. This could be anything from taking an online course to signing up for a dance class or joining a sports team. Not only will this help boost your mood and motivation, but it can also help improve your physical health as well!
5. Get organized
Another reason people become apathetic is because they feel overwhelmed by the huge to-do list in front of them. If that's the case, try getting only one thing on your list done each day, for example replying to emails or calling a potential client back. Not only will accomplishing these small tasks make you feel more productive, but it can also boost your self-esteem and give you more momentum going forward.
6. Set yourself up for success by managing negative thoughts
When we're feeling down, our minds are often swarming with negative thoughts which can be hard to control. Try bringing yourself out of this negative thought spiral by challenging each negative thought with a positive one. For example, if you're thinking "I can't do this," tell yourself "I can do this" or if you're thinking "this is too hard," remind yourself that "I am capable and strong."
7. Seek professional help
If you've been struggling with apathy for a long time and nothing seems to be helping, it may be time to seek professional help. A therapist can help you get to the root of your problem and give you tools to deal with your apathy in a more constructive way.
If you're feeling apathetic, know that you're not alone and there are things you can do to get yourself out of this slump. Try out some of the tips above and see which ones work best for you.
