Having great writing skills is a blessing in disguise. But this blessing comes at a cost. And, it is not god-given.

Every popular writer you see was average in their initial days. And, the writing skills they has got today was because they never gave up on it.

That’s what separates a successful writer from a failure. Writing isn’t hard, but to stick with it every day when you are getting nothing in return is. And, if you still want to continue with writing despite no returns, it means writing is your passion. You love writing. It means you don’t take money as your motivation for writing.

Writing requires no talent. It only needs sheer dedication and a heart to cope up with criticism. Here are the 3 tips to crush your next writing project.

Find your own voice

Writing is an art. When a reader is able to resonate with your words, that means your writing is effective. You have the power to harness people and move them with your words. It means you have your own voice. And, this is what every popular writer carries in his pockets.

Have you ever wondered, when you read an article from two popular authors on the same topic, you always find the difference in their writing style? That’s the power of voice. Both readers wrote on the same topic but still, both of them didn’t sound the same.

When you find your own voice, you don’t worry about others writing on a similar topic because readers always find a different angle from your perspective. Your voice separates you from other writers. It prevents you from sounding the same as the other writer.

If you haven’t found your writing voice, find one.

Write for your readers, not for yourself

Stop considering Medium or any other writing platform as your daily journal. It’s not the right place to do so. Writing is not only about yourself. Here’s the harsh truth — No one gives a f*ck to your personal stories.

They don’t want to hear what you did last Saturday or how you threw ice cream on a bald man’s head. They don’t care. They don’t know who you are. They are on this platform because they are looking for something valuable. Something which can help them with their problems.

Make yourself useful and help them. In return, they will give you what you want — blessings. And of course, views.

Read lots of books

Reading books have a positive effect on the core of your brain. Your thinking capacity gets a major boost. You think more creatively and effectively. You improve your vocabulary. New ideas keep revolving around your mind. And one best thing you can earn from reading books — your own voice.

When you read tons of books, fiction or non-fiction, you are one inch closer to finding your own voice. And, if you find any writer’s writing style matching yours, start reading his other books. One day, you will definitely found your own voice.

The Takeaway

One thing you need to make sure of is to write consistently. Writing every day may be hard but writing at your own pace isn’t. I know there are some writers like Tim Denning write every day. But you don’t have to be like him. I admire Tim a lot because of his daily writing habit. Sometimes, I wish to write like him. But I know, he has his own pace of writing. I have different. I can’t write every day.

Life is not the same every day. Someday you will suffer from back pain or someday you have to complete your assignments. Instead of setting yourself a daily writing target, only to curse yourself at the end, because you didn’t make it, is not the kind of motivation you will need. Better to write consistently at your own pace rather than every day.
