2020 Was Supposed to Be the Best Year Yet, What the Hell Happened!?

A reflection of the past few months and how best to move forward.

As another crazy, confusing and borderline apocalyptic week comes to an end I'm sat here with my feet up on the couch, sipping on a bourbon and thinking back to January 1st, 2020.

I know, it seems like a million years ago but in actual fact, it's only been three (and a bit) months. Crazy.

The reason I cast my mind back to that particular date - when the world seemed like a much simpler place to live - is because I was reading over the goals which I had set for myself just a few months ago.

The list is far from grandiose or exciting, in fact, it is almost cliché.

Of course, first on the list are health and fitness-related objectives - you have to have one of those, it's standard procedure when it comes to creating a list of yearly ambitions, especially on January 1st.

Next in line are the financial goals, the 'stop spending so much money on things I don't need' resolution.

Then comes my writing goals, which in all fairness have been the most successful off of the list so far, but still nowhere near where they should be. (I like to call that a work in progress kind of goal.)

But the one that made me smile the most, given our current situation, is the statement which I've written and underlined at the bottom of the page;

"Let's make 2020 the best one yet!"

This was supposed to be the beginning of a new way of life, for everybody.

The future seemed bright, exciting and full of untold potential.

It was a new year; a new decade and the world was optimistic about achieving great things.

But here we are, just a mere three months in and the place is in turmoil. Locked down. Segregated. Looking like a post-apocalyptic Hollywood movie. With 'social distancing' being the words on everyone's lips.

This is far from the new way of life that most of us had in mind.

I don't think anyone had envisioned a deadly virus spreading worldwide taking out the elderly and hospitalising the weak - well, there was probably someone who predicted it, we've all heard of those 'physics' from the past who can seemingly see into the future, but for most of us it came out of the blue.

But, and there's always a but, it's not all doom and gloom.

Sure, there is devastation happening the world over and no one quite knows what the hell is gonna happen in the months to come, but for the most part, all of that is out of our control.

All we can really do is sit tight, exercise common sense and keep calm.

This pandemic will not last forever.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.

So again, use common sense.

Do whatever you can to boost your immune system with the proper vitamins and minerals, practise good hygiene (which we should all be doing anyway, it's 2020, we shouldn't have to be told how to wash our hands) and for goodness sake chill out on the hoarding of toilet paper!

If you're using that much bog roll Covid-19 is the least of your worries.

But in all seriousness, if we can all just keep calm, be kind, caring, compassionate and patient with each other then we will be able to get through these tough times together.

The fear of the unknown can be overwhelming but let's not allow it to overcome us.

Stay safe out there and who knows, this year could still end up being the best one yet.

Thanks for reading! :)
