As we covered in our guide to diamond colour grades, all diamonds receive a grade between D and Z, which denotes their colour. D, the highest grade, is reserved for BLACK diamonds that do not show colour, even when viewed under bright lighting and magnification.

E Color Grade Diamonds are extremely rare in the natural world because they're only found in three per cent of diamonds mined from the earth's crust.

What Are E-Color Diamonds?

As we covered in our guide to diamond color grades, all diamonds receive a grade between D and Z, which denotes their color. D, the highest grade, is reserved for diamonds that do not show colour, even when viewed under bright lighting and magnification.

The E grade is given to diamonds with a very slight yellow tinge that is only visible when compared with diamonds of a higher color grade.

If you're only just beginning to learn about diamonds, E-colored diamonds might be a great choice for your first purchase. They have a natural yellow tone and an eye-appealing sheen that makes them look like more expensive diamonds than they are.

Suppose you're looking for one of these with specific attributes, such as shape or size. In that case, it can be very helpful to compare them side by side with A and F color diamonds to get an idea of how they compare in terms of quality and value.

It would be best if you also kept in mind that since E is still a grade away from D, it may be easier to find imperfections on E-graded diamonds than on D-colour ones.

E diamonds can be found in various shapes, cuts, and sizes. If you are looking for round-shaped diamonds, they will be, on average smaller than other shapes because cutters have to remove more material. On average, an E-colored round diamond will weigh between 0.20 carats and 0.30 carats.

E diamonds can also be found in different cuts, like heart shapes, a popular choice among women.

Heart-shaped diamonds are often difficult to make because of their naturally occurring inclusions and blemishes so that you may see a bit of a price difference between E-colour and higher-colored hearts. It would be best to remember that cuts can influence how much light a diamondback reflects into your eyes.

Understanding The Color Grading Scale

The color-grading scale for diamonds begins at D, with no hue present, and extends through the alphabet to Z, which has a light yellow or brownish tint. In most cases (except fancy-coloured diamonds), the farther down a diamond's scale falls, the less value it will have.

While D diamonds are considered colourless, G through I stones show a subtle yellow, gold, or brown tint when viewed under bright lighting. For J and K grades, those tints are even more apparent.

A diamond's cut grade is completely independent of its color grade; two diamonds can have identical proportions and sizes and receive different color grades depending on their hue. When considering diamonds for purchase, choose only those that fall within your budget.

If you purchase an E-colour grade diamond, it will likely be a slightly yellow-tinted stone. These stones can still appear white in many types of lighting and are highly valued by consumers because they match nearly every outfit choice and still look incredibly bright.

As with all diamonds, these stones can sparkle beautifully when paired with an excellent cut grade (which we'll cover later).

From A to J – Very Light Yellow

In the world of diamonds, E is considered to be very good. This is because E-color diamonds have very little yellow or brown hues. In addition, these stones are also very sparkly and have a great deal of brilliance.

When shopping for an E-color diamond, it is important to remember that these stones are still quite rare. Less than 5% of all diamonds fall into this category.

K to N – Faint Yellow

As we covered in our guide to diamond color grades, all diamonds receive a grade between D and Z, which denotes their color. D, the highest grade, is reserved for diamonds that do not show colour, even when viewed under bright lighting and magnification.

K to N diamonds shows a faint yellow hue that is only visible when compared with diamonds of a higher colour grade. While the yellow tint is more noticeable in these diamonds than in those graded D-J, it is still difficult to see without close inspection.

These faint yellow diamonds are an excellent choice for those looking for a budget-friendly option that still offers the beauty and durability of a natural diamond.

O to R – Strong Yellow

S to Z coloured diamonds are what's known as fancy yellow diamonds. These are the only colours where you can see a very slight tint of color in the diamond.

The stones graded S to Z will have a pale yellow or brown hue. Even with their relatively low color grades, fancy yellow diamonds are still quite popular because they offer great value. You should consider these stones if you want a yellow diamond engagement ring.

S to Z – Dark Yellow

S to Z diamonds are what most people think of when they think of a yellow diamond. These grades start at S, a light yellow, and end at Z, a deep or dark yellow. The closer a diamond is to being colorless (a D grade), the more valuable it is. However, S to Z diamonds can still be beautiful and make great engagement rings.
