“This is what I hate”

Over the last two weeks, the #EndSARS movement has gone from a simple peaceful protest that begun in Nigeria to a worldwide protest that has voices from all over the world calling for change in Nigeria.

There have been a number of images, logos, and symbols that have been synonymous with the #EndSARS movement – one of the most popular ones is none other than the symbol of a black raised closed fist against a yellow background.

This symbol became increasingly popular and over time, Nigerians all over the world begun changing their avatars and profile pictures to this symbol in a bid to show solidarity with the #EndSARS movement.

Now, this symbol that has become a powerful beacon of hope and togetherness is now the topic of divisive conversation all over the internet.

Here’s Why.

**Before reading on, please make sure to like and follow my Facebook page so you don't miss out on any new and interesting lists, articles, and stories that I post every single day. I have a really fun page. If you like my page, you will have fun too. So what's stopping you? Like my page and let's have fun together!

It all started when the designer of the logo, Ire Aderinokun, posted the image unto her page on 23rd October 2020, with the caption:

On another note, it was honestly so heartwarming to see how this logo I designed in less than 30 minutes and under so much pressure became such a powerful symbol in the movement Yellow heart

+ it was hilarious that misogynists thought the female symbol in it was “hidden”

Now, because most people’s avatars on social media are cropped, many people have never gotten to see the FULL LOGO. This is what the full logo looks like:

It’s understandable how people would never have noticed that the fist is inside the traditional symbol for female.

Ire continued on to say:

Men are so pained about this female symbol. I love to see it Face with tears of joy.

Now, this is when things started popping off.

A lot of people did not think it was important for the artist to make this a thing about feminism or try to start drama.

A Twitter user, @acaiafas said in response to the tweet:

That + wasn’t necessary. This isn’t and was never a feminist movement; it was a collective goal we all fought for both male and female. Let’s not make it about gender please. Let not your good be I’ll spoken of!

Another user @aniyomewa said:

This is so stupid because so many men supported this movement but anything for clout I guess

Another user, @chisom_hector added to the conversation saying:

This is how you divide a large group united for a cause. The platform given to you is far too sensitive to carry such narcissism.

The whole discourse about the logo and if the artist is trying to divide people continued to go on and on until it became a huge conversation on Twitter, so much so that celebrities and influencers had to take note and jump into the conversation.

Nigerian writer and influencer, JJ. Omojuwa took to his Twitter to write:

You guys are fighting over a logo? Logo? Kai. This work go hard mehn.

Nigerian manager, Ubi Franklin, quoted Omojuwa’s tweet above saying:

I Dey tell you.

Nollywood actress Queen Nwokoye upon seeing the artist’s original tweets had some choice words for her. She quoted the artist’s tweet and wrote:

This is what I hate about these fake twitter feminists who obviously don't know what feminism is all about. Being bitter, quarrelsome, hateful and outrightly foolish does not make you a feminist. It makes you a sick person. Bringing up gender war now is your agenda right?

Whew!

That’s All.
