As one of Asia's top tourist hotspots, Cambodia is a dynamic holiday destination like no other. Although it's possible to explore the country at any time of the year, those who are visiting the country for the first time should time the tour. This is especially necessary for those who intend to visit Angkor Wat and some of the most iconic heritage sites in the country. Here's a guide to help first-time visitors decide on the timing of their Cambodian trip.

Weather Wise

In terms of weather and the peak tourist season, the best time to tour Cambodia is from November to May when the chance of rain is at its lowest. The weather is sunny, warm and pleasant during this dry spell when humidity is not as intense as it is in the rest of the year. This is also the official dry season in the country so those who intend to head to the beach towns in Cambodia or engage in outdoor activities such as hiking and water sports will also find the best weather conditions between November and May.

Avoid the Wet Season

It is possible to visit Cambodia at any time of the year, although the wet season from June to October is not ideal. During this time, there is heavy rainfall and frequent thunderstorms which make it difficult to tour the famous landmarks that Cambodia is known for. If you prefer to stay dry during your travels, it is best to avoid visiting Cambodia during this season as the rains can be relentless. However, if you enjoy cooler temperatures or don't mind getting wet, this may be the perfect time for you to visit. Keep in mind that touring the heritage sites and participating in outdoor activities can be challenging during this period. It is also worth noting that the months leading up to the wet season, particularly April, can be very hot, so it's best to avoid visiting during this time.

Best Time to Visit Angkor Wat

Most travellers visit Cambodia to tour Angkor Wat, which is a must-see for anyone visiting Siem Reap or any other popular cultural landmarks in the country. The best time to visit is between December and March because of the dry conditions. However, during these months, there are too many visitors, making it difficult to capture clear and unobstructed temple shots of this sprawling complex. To avoid the crowds and take epic Angkor Wat shots, experts recommend visiting Siem Reap and other former strongholds of the Khmer empire during the last few days of the wet season. Although there may be rain puddles and light showers in most locations, these hotspots will be virtually deserted due to the monsoon conditions. This is why it's the perfect time to head down to Angkor Wat, the Bayon Temple, and the archaeological sites throughout the country.

How to Avoid the Crowds

Tourists interested in venturing to other parts of Cambodia without bumping into hundreds of other travellers will find that skipping the November to March peak travel period is key. The Lunar New Year and other local festivities also make it difficult for first-time visitors to enjoy their time in Cambodia as many local families and school children will be visiting key attractions around the country. This is why the month of January and February will not suit introverts and other tourists hoping to explore Cambodia in peace.  Apart from these two periods, one is likely to encounter fewer tourists during the remainder of the year even if the weather may not always lend itself to excursions. Staying at high-end accommodation hubs offered by popular chains such as Anantara Hotels & Resorts will also cost less during these months according to luxury hotel blog posts.
