We will be discussing some common facts and myths to give you an overall experience in RCT and eliminate the fear of getting it done.

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is given to a patient with a tooth having an infection or decayed root. It is performed by removing the infected root and remaining pulp from the bottom by creating a canal-like way. The gap is then filled with the filling made by a dentist. This is used to save the tooth by not actually removing it from the root. Before filling it up, the gap is cleaned and disinfected by advanced equipment. Some patients also feel sensitivity while the treatment is given to them, and for that, local anesthesia is given to avoid both pain and sensitivity. It is one of the most common procedures after cavity filling, and people opt for it for further decay of the root, as this whole procedure is an alternate solution for tooth removal. It is generally performed in a few sittings and the tooth functions as normally as it was doing. Let us further burst some myths with facts here.

1. A Root Canal Treatment is Expensive:

It is one of the most common tooth treatments in dentistry, and almost every dentist performs it. It is not very expensive; it can be considered an investment in your teeth. A decaying tooth can cost you even more if left untreated, and a root canal is cheaper than that. You are saving your teeth from extraction and saving up the money that you might spend again on them if it gets decaying; hence it is not expensive.

2. Children Should Not Get It Done:

Children with permanent teeth can have it done as it is nearly painless and feels nothing after getting it done. If your child is having a decaying root and filling is not the solution for it, Root Canal Treatment can be given to the child as one should not get it extracted at such a young age.

3. Takes Up All Your Time:

Some root canal treatments are done even in one seating. Well, it totally depends on your overall infection, if it is more then it will take time if a very less part is infected then it will take very less time.

4. It is Very Painful:

The whole treatment is done in anesthesia and further painkillers are given to you so that you can’t feel any pain. It is one of the most common misconceptions, as the jaw heals itself after some time and gets back to normal in no time.

5. You Have To Re-Do It:

No, it is a completely safe procedure and has a success rate of 95%. Which is huge in the medical industry. In some rare cases after 15–20 years if the filling gets disturbed or removed due to some accident then you have to retake it, rest is not a necessity.
