DR. WENDY BLACK IN BUSINESS: LAWS OF ATTRACTION IN ACTION

Food Beyond Nutrition

Dr. Wendy Dearborne, moved to the Las Vegas Valley over 25 years ago from London, UK, where she was born and raised of West Indian parentage. Having a doctor’s degree in life coaching and metaphysical science she’s aided people around the globe in personal growth, counseling, and teaching the understanding that food goes beyond its nutritional value. A true entrepreneur and business woman, her altruistic contributions online and in the real world branch out in various industries, from nutrition author, podcast host, choice expert and clarity coach. My life, as well as those she’s touched, would be stunted and considerably different without her emotional intelligence, support, encouragement and words of inspiration which have made a tremendous impact in pushing people to sculpt an authentic life, trust their intuition, and focus on personal goals and expectations in each evolving phase of life’s journey.

I met Wendy roughly ten years ago through happenstance at a time in my twenties when I needed guidance, spirituality, comfort, understanding and healing. Busy working and attending University, I felt a void and lack of purpose, and was given her contact info per my eldest sister’s assent. I’d never visited a Life Coach before, and knew only minor details about her. She was English, helpful and clairvoyant. Intrigued, I booked an appointment and went to her office with an open mind. It was located next to the hospital where I was born, sandwiched between my parents house and Las Vegas Boulevard, where tourists and locals indulged in gambling, pleasure, work, entertainment and temptation. I never felt at home living in the city, but kept myself occupied, wrapped up in work, art, film school projects, and music journalism in an adult Disneyland atmosphere where vices thrived, inhibitions diminished and family and culture slowly blossomed for others.

When I entered her office it smelled of citronella and essential oils. There were books, and photos of Pharaohs, ancient Egypt, and wooden graphs hands and feet, charting meridian lines and mapping reflexology across the body. I felt at ease, yet nervous divulging my inner thoughts to a stranger. Her holistic natural medicine style felt therapeutic. I proceeded to a room with a window overlooking the city skyscrapers. I took off my shoes and sat on a white bed surrounded by soft comfy pillows, with my legs sprawled out, bare-feet exposed, aromatherapy and faint meditation music in the air, crystal stones on the windowsill, and Wendy before me. She asked why I came to see her, rubbed oil between her palms, massaged my feet and listened as I vented my frustrations, insecurities, traumas and woes.

I visited Wendy countless times over the years, always fascinated by her life stories, grace and philosophy. Whether the subject matter was relationships, existentialism, career, finance, social status, narcissism, neglect, self-hate, empowerment, gratitude or psychology – like a sage she showed me a different perspective. When words didn’t suffice, she used other tactics. At one session she brought me a small plastic container of mushy Play-Doh clay, and told me to create anything I wanted with it. It was bright blood orange in color and smelled of a lost distant childhood. As she consoled me and soothed my soul, I molded a lumpy train atop a set of crooked railroad tracks. She eloquently spoke as the train wobbled and toppled over in my lap. She observed my creation and said, ‘Sometimes in life we get derailed, but through those pitfalls, we pick ourselves up and build a stronger foundation and keep moving forward. There is no right or wrong path, there are just different choices and ways to get there. Through every detour and obstacle, we learn something new along the way.’

Wendy’s humility extends beyond the office and online platforms. Most notably the volunteer work at Shade Tree, a women’s shelter for displaced battered women, abused children and pets. Helping women who feel powerless to make choices to keep themselves and children safe, and develop self-love. “Most people let fear lead their life. What if may not happen. People don’t think well of themselves. Nobody should be treated that way. I ask them, what they’re wanting for their life in this moment? What does it look, taste, sound, smell and feel like? Paint me a picture. If you can paint it for me, you can change it for yourself. Your history is not your destiny, unless you choose it to be. Choices are your destiny,” she said. Believe and manifest. See things with a new curiosity. The quality kids possess. Everything that’s happened can’t be changed, but can be used to move forward, she wants people to see power of their choice in manifesting their tomorrow.

Among her influences Wendy credits her parents, their new era thought, faith, meditation practice and love of Metaphycics. Along with Metaphyscians, Florence Scovel Shinn’s “Game of Life and How to Play It,” Dr. Joseph Murphy, Neville Goddard’s power of universal laws and forces, and Prentice Mulford’s philosophy of thoughts becoming things. A near death experience transformed her life into new found purpose, innate desire to help people struggling and understand they do have a choice. “As a teen all of my friends had broken wings. Anyone that was suffering, whether it was relationship or health, I would try helping them. It used to be a challenge for me to see people struggling.” Now her work gives her satisfaction seeing clients flourish and thrive. Taking action on insight gained from self through the intrinsic type of coaching and dialogue she does. “Helping people isn’t about sacrifice, but support. Casting blames serves no purpose, other than holding self in bondage. People are people no matter who they are or where they’re from. All want to be loved, and express themselves. We all suffer from same human conditions.”

Regarding racism, Wendy says, “It can undermine the fabric of any society and erode social structures. It’s there because people aren’t happy within themselves and don’t take ownership and responsibility for their actions. It’s easy to cast the blame on somebody else because of what they look like. People don’t take ownership for things they’ve chose to do.” It’s a negative place she prefers not to dwell. She laments about the manner in which George Floyd was killed, showing the disproportionate powers of police. “There needs to be change all around, of how people feel about themselves.”

Wendy’s life dramatically changed when her reflexology and alternative health care practice unexpectedly closed. At the same time, her parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Cancer. Uncertain of their well-being and her own, sent her into a downward spiral prompting her to use the tools she teaches, to get her life back on track. She made a choice to change her life by changing the relationship she had with food and committed to raising awareness that the power of food has effects that transcend its nutritional importance. Colors, textures, shapes, aromas and tastes all play an integral part in the mind, body and spirit balance. She began a whole food plant based dietary challenge, showing her clients, followers and skeptics alike the power of choosing proactive change, by turning a tragic situation, into a life affirming inspirational journey. She accomplished this by using something that we all need to sustain life, food. Not only from a nutritional standpoint, but the spirituality that each morsel imparts into our lives. Inventing creative recipes and posting savory videos on her website, giving an intimate look into her kitchen.

Mediation has been key in Wendy’s life, allowing her to tap into inner resources, quiet the mind, hear internal dialogue, heal self, decision making, fire intuition, be herself, and are powerful tools anyone can use. “It’s about becoming quiet and going within, with self about self. Your life is built and based on the choices you make. You can only make one choice at a time. Choose wisely. Take the time to have an internal conversation with self about what you truly want. Make choices necessary to make that happen. Choices won’t always be popular among your family and peers. But you want to live the life you want.” Mediation has taught her the art of surrender and letting go. Not throwing the towel in or blame, just letting go. Only one thing can feel any space at one time, freeing up universal real estate so manifestation can come forward. Everything you have and will experience. We are not guaranteed our next breath, make this moment count for all its worth.

Like my own personal Oprah, Tony Robbins and chef melded into one, I continue to find solace in her compassionate poetic words when clouded by uncertainty, as well as joy in the kitchen when sharing inspirational cuisine. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish shying away from the comfort zone of my hometown, and taking a job traveling the world on a European tour without her guidance. She motivated me to take action and make choices to live my most authentic self, instead of passively gripping onto setbacks as if they were permanent states of being. I admire Wendy for the stories she’s shared, the story she’s lived, and the purpose her practice in healing gives to herself and others. Like a root from a tree, going deeper than the surface of people, and delving into vulnerability, and becoming an integral part of the healing process.

Wendy’s Nuances of life…

“You are never ending perfection continuously evolving. We live by the code of Universal Laws that grants us the inherent right to choose for self. Your life is all about the choices you have made and the choices you will make.”
