Did you know that there are over 6.3 billion people in the world that own a smartphone? That’s more than 80% of the current human global population. That number really astounded me. It’s no wonder there are so many different mobile apps with all manner of features and services. That’s a lot of users with all different tastes, needs, and preferences.

But, at this point, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with all of the apps out there. The pandemic has definitely caused me to download more apps than usual, whether it’s out of boredom or necessity. At this point, I have multiple apps that all do the same thing.

Food Delivery? Yep! I’ve got DoorDash, UberEats, EatStreet, Grubhub, and Postmates. How about ride services? Absolutely! There’s Uber and Lyft. But I’m not sure why I even have both. Messaging apps? Don’t even get me started.

All of this got me thinking, why hasn’t anyone made an all-in-one app? Why do I need a single app for everything? That’s when I did a little googling and stumbled upon Halen, a new app doing exactly that.

What is Halen?

After doing some research on Halen, I actually discovered something funny. Apparently, super-apps do exist and are actually quite popular in other parts of the world, like Asia, Europe and Africa. In fact, they’ve actually become so ingrained in their society it’s almost mandatory for banking, and they boast billions of users. So it’s quite understandable why Halen would want to create something like that for users in the US.

So… what is Halen? Halen is a super-app that combines ridesharing, delivery services, flight arrangements, and even hospitality services all in a single application. For US residents, that’s at least 6 different apps and services.

The more I read about Halen and the concept behind super-apps, the more it just makes sense. Several articles even brought up advantages and benefits I hadn’t even thought about.

  • Security - Using multiple apps means using several different logins and passwords. It also means your personal information is given to each one of them. That information could range from an email address to credit card numbers. Not exactly things I want to be handing out everywhere.
  • Battery life - More apps = more battery usage, especially if you leave them running in the background. Not only do I keep my phone on a low battery usage mode, but I’ve also had to get in the habit of closing background apps regularly. I can imagine cutting down on the number of apps can extend the battery life of your phone by quite a lot.
  • Convenience - Everything is all in one place. So I can get rid of the four different food delivery apps. I have the capabilities of multiple apps all in one place. That means I only have to remember one login and password.
  • Coordination - Halen operates like an all-in-one travel tool too. It provides ridesharing, food delivery, hotel services, and even flight arrangements. So you can pretty much manage and monitor your entire trip from the app.

Super-app? It’s About Time!

Reading into the many uses and advantages of a super-app has gotten me pretty excited for what Halen can offer. While the app isn’t completely finished, it already offers multiple services that users can take advantage of. But, if it becomes anything like the super-apps in Asia or the EU, it could pretty much become the new metahub for daily life.

Halen arrives in early 2022 on both iOS and Android, so no one is left out. The developers are even putting together a desktop application that will be released a little later on in the year. I’m excited to see how things turn out. It’s about time the US got its own super-app.
