Planet Fitness has become one of the most recognizable names in the fitness industry, thanks to its affordable membership options and “judgement-free zone” approach to working out. The gym has grown rapidly since its founding in 1992, with over 2,000 locations in the United States, Canada, and other countries around the world.

So what is it that makes Planet Fitness stand out from other gyms? And why has it been so successful in attracting members? In this article, we’ll explore the history of Planet Fitness, its unique approach to fitness, and what makes it a great option for people of all fitness levels.

History of Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness was founded in 1992 by Michael Grondahl and his father, and originally operated under the name “Gold’s Gym.” However, the Grondahls were sued by the owners of the Gold’s Gym franchise, and were forced to change the name of their gym. They settled on “Planet Fitness,” with the idea of creating a gym that was open and welcoming to everyone.

The first Planet Fitness location opened in Dover, New Hampshire, and was an instant hit with locals. The gym’s low prices and no-frills approach to fitness appealed to people who were looking for an affordable place to work out without feeling intimidated or judged. The company quickly expanded, opening additional locations throughout the Northeast.

In 2003, Planet Fitness was acquired by private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, which helped fuel the company’s growth. Today, Planet Fitness is one of the largest and most successful gym chains in the world.

Unique Approach to Fitness

One of the things that sets Planet Fitness apart from other gyms is its “judgement-free zone” philosophy. This approach is based on the idea that everyone should feel comfortable and accepted at the gym, regardless of their fitness level, size, or appearance.

To create a judgement-free environment, Planet Fitness has implemented a number of policies and practices. For example, the gym does not allow “gymtimidation” – behaviors such as grunting, dropping weights, or showing off – that can make other members feel uncomfortable or intimidated. The gym also does not allow mirrors in the main workout area, as some people may feel self-conscious about their appearance.

Another aspect of Planet Fitness’s approach is its focus on making fitness accessible to everyone. The gym offers a range of cardio and strength-training equipment, as well as free fitness training for all members. This training is designed to help members get comfortable with the gym and its equipment, and to provide them with guidance on how to achieve their fitness goals.

Planet Fitness also offers a number of classes, including yoga, cycling, and kickboxing, which are included in the price of membership. These classes are designed to be fun and accessible to people of all fitness levels, and are led by certified instructors who are trained to provide modifications for different abilities and injuries.

Membership Options

One of the reasons that Planet Fitness has become so popular is its affordable membership options. The gym offers two basic membership plans: the $10/month “Classic” plan, and the $22.99/month “Black Card” plan.

The Classic plan gives members access to their home gym, as well as free fitness training. Members can also use the gym’s cardio and strength-training equipment, and attend classes that are included in the membership.

The Black Card plan includes all of the benefits of the Classic plan, as well as a few additional perks. Members with a Black Card can use any Planet Fitness location, and can bring a guest with them for free. They also have access to the gym’s massage chairs, hydromassage beds, and tanning beds.
