Are you interested in making the lawn around your home look a lot better? One way to do this is by planting grass seed. Have you considered planting grass seed all in a bid to make your lawn look better? The tips below will come in very handy in helping you do it the right way even if you are doing so for the first time.

You Must Plant Grass Seed at the Right Time

The time of the year has to be taken into consideration when planting grass seed in your lawn. This is because the success of the planted grass seed is very dependent on what the time of the year it is. When planted at the right time, your grass seed will definitely germinate the right way. Beyond germinating the right way, it will grow rapidly and stay healthy.

There is no perfect time to plant grass seed for your lawn. The time that is considered perfect for one grass seed might not be good enough for another. The type of grass you are looking to plant, as well as the region your lawn has a strong influence on what the right time to plant grass seed is.

When planting talk fescue, perennial ryegrass, or Kentucky bluegrass in the northern part of the United States, you will get the best results when in spring or fall. During this period, the weather is cool and these grass types are usually most active during this period.

When planting grass seeds in Massachusetts, you will get great results when you plant in early fall. During this period, the ground can help with germination as it is warm. In addition to the ground being warm, the days are usually rainy and cool. Grass seeds planted by this time of the year do very well as they never dry out says Sun's Out Landscape. Furthermore, they get to enjoy the amount of sunlight that they need to get established before winter.

If you will be planting cool-season grasses in your lawn, you will be able to get a lot of results when you plant in spring. Beyond just planting in spring, you have to plant early in spring. That’s not all. You will get best results when daytime temperatures fluctuate between 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit

When planting Zoysia grass, centipede grass, Bahia grass, Bermuda grass, and other warm-season lawn grasses that are categorized as warm-season lawn grasses in the southern part of the United States, you will get stunning results when you plant in early summer or spring. You will need to wait until the temperature in the day is about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Get the Site Ready

One step you must take when planting grass seed for a lawn is to get the site ready. In the absence of the right site preparation, you will not be able to get the right type of lawn. The first thing you should do when getting the site ready is to grade it. When this is done, mowing becomes easy. Furthermore, the efficient draining of water will be encouraged. That’s not all. The lawn area has to slope away from the buildings in the same piece of land. A rate of about 1 o 2 percent will be great. There will always be the temptation to make slopes that are steeper. You, however, will need to avoid this as very steep slopes might make the lawn dry out more rapidly than they should.

It is important that you smooth the site properly. This way, depressions which could cause wet splits to develop can be prevented. Wet splits do not look good. Also, they make mowing difficult and might cause your lawn to get diseased easily.

When getting the site for a lawn ready, if you are considering replacing a lawn completely, you must take out the old turf completely. To do this, you will need a sod cutter. This sod cutter makes it possible for you to take every old grass out right from its root. If you do not want to do this manually, you can spray the entire lawn with a herbicide. This herbicide has to be non-selective. In addition to making use of a herbicide that is non-selective, you must follow whatever instructions come with the herbicide strictly.

Get the Soil Ready

To get very healthy looking lawns, you will need to prepare the soil carefully. When the soil meant from planting grass seeds is at its optimum, you will be getting a very healthy looking lawn.

Some steps you must take when preparing the soil for grass seed planting are:

Test the soil: Doing this will help you know what the soil’s pH is. You will most likely get the healthiest lawn when your soil pH is between 6 to 7.5.

Still on testing soil pH, it is easy to take soil samples, however, carrying out the exact test has to be done by professionals.

Change the Soil pH: If the soil does not have the right pH for properly growing, you will need to alter its pH. If the soil has a pH that is higher than expected, it can be fixed by using elemental sulfur.

You will also need to add some nutrients to the soil and work on its structure if it lacks the right structure.

Select the Most Ideal Seed

You have to plant the right seed when looking to grow the perfect lawn. You must buy one that is ideal for your climate and is of the right quality.

Plant your Seed

After carefully following the steps that will lead you to develop the right lawn, you can go ahead and plant your grass seed. You must take a close look at the label of the seed to be planted and adhere to every instruction it contains. If seeds are not used the right way, you will be unable to get the right results.

Beyond paying attention to details and following the instructions strictly, you must use the right spreader for whatever situation you are in.
