From small changes to big enhancements, remodeling the kitchen doesn’t have to be stressful – the key is to plan it out, measure everything, and choose wisely. The rest will fall into place. The following kitchen remodeling trends and tips will help to ensure a smooth process.

Start with the flooring

The floors of your kitchen are one of the most important aspects when it comes to functionality and looks. Because you’re always going to be working with, and carrying, food and drink, you want floors that are durable and easy to clean.

Carpets are a no-no, while tiles and wood flooring are most common. Hardwood floors, such as oak, are by far one of the most popular choices for 2021 – they are easy to lay as they come in thick planks, they’re completely natural, and they can handle temperature changes well. Unlike softwood, such as pine, they don’t dint easy either, which is exactly what you want in a room with high foot traffic.

Enhance with new cupboards

Working your way up from the floors, the cupboards and cabinets you choose can really make or break the overall aesthetics of your kitchen. Plain white is popular at the moment, it won’t date, and it stands out. Also, streamlined kitchens (without handles) are also popular.

If you want to save costs, you might opt for ready to assemble cabinets that come in a flat pack from your local department store. These are cost-effective, but they can be limited in style and color choice. If you have enough money in the budget, go for semi-custom or custom-made cabinets instead – you can tailor these to suit your kitchen, rather than the other way around.

Change the entire look with the backsplash

By updating your backsplash, you can change the entire look of your kitchen. Adding color where there used to be white, bringing in designs instead of monotone tiles, or choosing a matte finish instead of satin could make all the difference.

You could even choose to stencil some designs and paint them yourself if you’re feeling artistic. Choose material that can withstand backsplash, hot oil, spilled foods – and that is easy to clean.

Introduce an island

If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed about a kitchen, no matter how big it is, you always seem to run out of space. Adding a kitchen island when you remodel is a great enhancement, adding a focal point in the room, while at the same time providing a practical space that can be used for preparing food, cooking food, eating food, and even washing dishes if you want to include a sink.

Natural stones, such as granite, marble, and quartz, are popular for an island as they are durable and don’t generally mark easily. Make sure the height of the island matches your bench height and that you have plenty of room around it for people to stand or sit.

Upgrade your hardware and fixtures

Remodeling your kitchen is the ideal time to upgrade your doorknobs and handles, as well as your taps, your kitchen sink, rangehood, and so on. Because you’re working in the kitchen with high heat, lots of oils, and food, you want to make sure everything is durable and sturdy. When it comes to the material to use, stainless steel is always a winner in this environment. Nickel and brass are also popular choices.

Include luxury appliances

If you’re going to remodel your kitchen, you don’t want to skimp on the appliances. After all, a great looking kitchen is no good if it’s not functional. Old appliances are energy-wasting and they can be expensive to run, so opt for energy-efficient appliances.

Keep an eye out for the Star Ratings and choose appliances that are going to save you money in the long-term. Stainless steel appliances, in particular, will bring a modern flair to your kitchen. And don’t be afraid to ditch your 10-year-old fridge and replace it with something more modern and with a higher energy rating.

Kitchens account for 79% of remodeling projects and the return on investment is generally well worth the price. If you’re planning on remodeling your kitchen this year, efficiency is key – energy, time, and money efficiency. If you take on board the above tips, you’re guaranteed a kitchen that looks great now, and still looks great in 10 years.
