Quora, Reddit and Substack consistently beat us in the race for search engine results. No more. We're making it our mission this year to improve our ecosystem. Stick with us and we'll bring you along! Step 1: it starts with hashtags.

If you don't stray far from adding #blessed to all your gooey couple's photos, or worse, you're still stuck thinking # only means "pound", you're missing out on major SEO potential.

How Do Hashtags Improve SEO?

"#Hashtags now go beyond being used only for discovering the latest trending topics. They can now add value to your #SEO campaigns and, by using them properly on social media, you can drive long-term, steady referral traffic back to your site. So how can your brand take advantage of this feature? Incorporating hashtags into your social media posts will mean you have more opportunities to place your content in Google search results. Well-placed hashtags in your blog titles, #Facebook, #Instagram, and #Twitter posts create an additional way for users to search and discover your brand. Even links to hashtags in descriptions on #Pinterest posts are now showing up in Google search results." - sourced from Red Crow Marketing (full article below)

The better question is: how can #hashtags improve my Vocal stats?

We hear it over and over again, how read scores are impossibly difficult to improve. And yes, it is tough. But tough is not the same as impossible. The Chronicle is a creator, too, so we understand the uphill battle of pushing your work. One of the ways some creators can strike big is if somehow their article gets picked up by search engines. For example, Atomic Historian's article was a top Google search result briefly, which, of course, sky rocketed their reads without read swapping.

Choose quality over quantity.

Think of the big movements out there: #Let'stalk or #metoo or #BLM. None of them would have reached the amount of people they did—and so quickly—without the usage of hashtags. But it's not going to be effective if we chuck a whole bunch of random, garbled tags on our stories that change with every creator and every topic. We need unity. We, as Vocal creators, need a signature.

Vocal has a hashtag. Did you know?

It's #bevocal.

The magazine has two #bettertogether and #chroniclecreators

Haven't found us on Twitter yet, btw? Here we are!

Those are good...but...

The most popular tags out there are often #_noun_of_platform. Example: #catsofinstagram

The "ofblank" format is memorable. It's specific. It's perfect.

Let's use it!

Going forward, we urge you all to start tagging in unity.

Write together. Tag together. Be connected.

#bevocal #creatorsofvocal #chroniclecreators

Stay tuned.

Much love,

Your VCC team Xx
