Depending on the thickness and hardness of the stone, different tools are recommended for cutting natural stone. Granite, for example, is one of the hardest natural stones in the world, while porous travertine is easier to cut. Unlike porcelain stoneware, all natural stones have in common a massive structure that does not allow them to be cut with a tile cutter (material with which you cut the tile and it breaks easily).

Cutting asphalt blade is a little more complicated, but not impossible. In any case, plan to order 10% more of your square meter area. Especially if you decide to do the laying yourself, there will definitely be breakage. Once you have gathered the materials and everything is prepared, you can cut the stone. • Cutting Natural Stone with an angle Grinder

If you choose to do the cutting with an angle grinder (also called a flex grinder), you should be prepared for a dusty affair. For this reason, protective clothing is essential. Mask and goggles against dust become indispensable here. For your own safety, we also recommend having ear protection, work gloves and steel toe boots. If you are sufficiently protected, you can cut the stone. Use a diamond disc to work on hard material. Instead of cutting the natural stone entirely and therefore increasing the wear of the diamond disc excessively, you can cut the tiles or slabs on both sides to a depth of about 1 cm. Next,

• Cutting Natural Stone with a wet saw

If you forego dust, natural stones can be cut with a wet saw. You can safely rent it from a nearby DIY store, where you should also ask for advice on how to operate it. With this method you need a special diamond blade suitable for wet cutting. The asphalt blade offers two main advantages: first, the edges are cleaner and straighter than with an angle grinder, and second, the water limits the dust.

Cutting natural stone is so much more pleasant and laying natural stone covering becomes more pleasant. However, you also need protection here, safety glasses, work gloves and steel toe shoes

• The final touch

If you modified your stone with the wet saw, the edges of the slabs or tiles are straight. For some projects, rounded edges are preferable. The solution is to take back the angle grinder: this is simply placed in the desired angle on an edge of the natural stone, and done!

As you can see, natural stone can be cut easily. If you need more tips for your do-it-yourself project, you can read our other articles in our magazine. We wish you success!
