What Does 'Processed Through ISC New York' Mean on USPS Tracking

A lot of time international mails and packages going to and from the US through New York appear to be stuck at a step/ notification regarding the ISC New York. On their tracking portal. A lot of people get confused and flustered by this when the processing status does not change for many days.

Let us discuss all the USPS tracking service and ISC in detail and what it means by the different notifications given to you at the USPS tracking portal.

USPS Tracking Portal:

The United States Postal Service (USPS) provides its customers with an online tracking service for its national and international mails and parcels. On the tracking portal, you get notified about the current processing status and location of the parcel.

ISC New York:

ISC stands for International Service Centre. It is a building where all items that are entering or leaving the US and containerized for the purpose of transfer and distribution.

For Items leaving the US, these containerized items are then dispatched to the nearest airport to flights all over the world. These items may be airmail or international parcels.

Meanwhile, for items that are arriving in the US, these items, both mail, and parcels, are processed here after they have been checked and cleared by the customs. The items are then containerized by the city and sent to their final destinations.

USPS Tracking: Order of Automated messages:

When a parcel arrives at the ISC after clearing customs or for being transferred outside of the country, the USPS tracking portal will give you the tracking status,

  • “ISC New York NY, Processed through faculty.”

This usually means that the parcel or mail that you sent has arrived at ISC and a robot has scanned its barcode.

Now supposing you live in New York, the next message you would receive would be.

  • “Metro NY Distribution Centre, Arrived at USPS Regional Facility.”

This means that it has been scanned by another robot upon arrival in your region.

This message will be followed by

  • “In Transit to next Faculty.”

And the item will reach your doorstep by then.

Problems with ISC: “Processed through ISC New York”:

1. USPS Tracking Stops for a long time:

One of the things that happen at the ISC is that the USPS tracking portal does not get updated for a while. This is because once the incoming or outgoing mails and parcels are containerized. There are no barcodes to be read. So the updating cannot be done till they arrive in another city or are removed from the containers for sorting purposes.

So in the end, it might be that your item is in transit but you’re not aware of it.

2. Problem with Automated tracking:

All the tracking by USPS is done by automated scanning of barcodes on the object or shipping documents. If the barcode or shipping documents are lost during some sort of rough handling by the automated equipment then the parcel is totally done for and you will get no further tracking unless there are multiple shipping documents attached to it.

In such a case upon further inquiry, they will label your parcel as lost and that is the end of it.

3. Problems with USPS customer care:

Even when the parcel is lost and stuck at a tracking status, the USPS customer care lacks any and all interest in your demands usually. So you should not expect much help from it.

They either don’t know or don’t care and usually blame the customs for having it. Even when you implement a search, you get computer-generated emails telling you that they are doing all they can, but there is usually no further response.

4. Customs Problem:

Sometimes when the tracking status is stuck at ISC. It is because it has not yet been delivered to ISC in the first place. It might mean that the CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) has it. Let us look more into why this happens.

If your parcel is inbound for a country like Germany or the UK then your parcel is most likely to get through easily unless the person sending the parcel is on a watch list.

If it is coming from countries like China or India, Parcels spends a lot of time with the customs being checked, and sometimes being physically opened and suspended. Your item may be processed from there in 7-10 days or it might never arrive as it won’t clear the customs.

This is true for a lot of parcels arriving from countries like Iran and Turkey etc.

5. Lack of ISC Facilities:

Mail from the whole country gets sent through a total of 5 ISC that are available in the country. The One in New York is the busiest one out of them all and it usually takes this ISC the most time to get their hands on the parcel and process it.

Final Words:

  • Lack of transparency is the major issue with regards to the package and tracking here. You are not informed properly and the USPS is not interested in helping out properly in locating lost parcels.
  • Meanwhile, it is also true that a lot of Illegal stuff tries to get past the New York Customs and ISC which have to be suspended and they won’t call about it to tell you that “Hey, the drugs you order from Columbia aren’t arriving anytime soon.”
  • This even led to an audit once which showed major problems in the system for sorting parcels but the audit didn’t have any value as the company disagreed with it.

So in the end it comes down to the sender, the sending company, the item is shipped, and your luck. With any luck and an item to be transported that is totally legal, your parcel is likely to be able to make out of ISC processing without any harm. It may take more time if your parcel comes from any of the countries CBA routinely checks upon but you should usually make it to you unless the shipping details have been torn off due to rough handling.
