Summoning the Flame Within

Power is described as the ability to do something or act in a particular fashion. The second definition is what most people want out of power which is, the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of another. The only real definition of power is the ability to control oneself. Once this is known and exercised, all power is accessible to you. Why start with power? Power is the only measure of action in the world at large. If you have power than you most likely have influence, wealth, control etc... Power is the only thing that others have to respect, regardless of their own opinions or moral standings.

How does one get a lot of power? As I said earlier, power is only obtained through self control. If you are able to fully control your actions and thoughts than no one can temp you, constrain you or destroy you. However, having full autonomy and superintendence over yourself looks wholly different than one would think. Can you reduce your daily language output by 50%? Or, is it possible for you to slow your movement down by 50%? If you have elaborate kinesic abilities (movement ability) in order to carry out whatever action necessary, then and only then, do you have the power needed to accomplish anything.

Remember, having immense energy doesn't equal power unless it can be controlled. Activities such as speech can and usually will strip the power from you but in context, controlled speech, can grant you immense power and the ability to change many circumstances within your life. If you were unwilling or unable to control your physical mind and body than power is unable to be sought.

The control of urges is also important to obtaining power. You can be controlled by your urges and even have your urges present themselves in others perception of you, causing them to use it against you or judge you themselves. Smoking is one of the largest unwise addictions to start and hardest to stop. This habit is easy to stop if you can control the mechanism you use to prolong the habit aka breathing. If you are able to control your breath then you will be able to control the urge. This is true when it comes to any type of habit that hinders you. Take hold of its mechanism and power is restored to you.

If, for example you are stuck in constant thought, the act of meditation (Quieting of the mind) will help because meditation would control the mechanism which in this case is the physical mind. To compound on this principle you must be able to be unafraid to take control of whatever irregularity you possess, even if it is a seemingly impossible endeavor. Even if the process is alienating or it lowers your status temporarily keep regulating the mechanism.

To continue, another aspect of power is detachment and absoluteness. When you are a person with power you must be able to make informed decisions without second guessing yourself. This may require you to be detached to the outcome or morality of said action or task. An example of this is a military general ordering an attack on a hostile encampment. The entire area may not be at fault but those who inhabit the encampment may be a creditable threat, thus making the decision to attack hard but necessary. If one has the ability to detach and inform oneself about the issue at hand then it is easier to make "tough decisions".

Power congeals only when you are encased around those who have the same goals. The saying "Show me your friends and I'll show you your future" is true. In every movie, story or true life event where a person becomes powerful there is a team behind that person. A crazy fact is that Rosa Parks was not the first women to refuse her seat on a segregated bus but those heading the Civil Rights Movement made her the poster child for the boycotts, why? Her actions fit the goals of the movement and it was perfect timing.

Keep in mind that power waxes and wanes but the one who truly understands this will always have power. The stance of becoming the most powerful has to deal with the losing and gaining of power cyclically. If you know that your competition or yourself will lose control or power when faced with a particular issue etc.. then one must be ready to lose power in order to gain it at the proper time. If you cannot regain control of yourself then you were not ready to wield the power you initially had.

Power is many things, a construct of society, a measure of control and the ability to change the external world but power is ultimately not for you but for the people you serve.
