Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament for the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, since 1986. She is the current Finance Minister of India, having been appointed to the position in 2019. Prior to this, she has also served as the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Corporate Affairs. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party in India.

Sitharaman was born on August 18, 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. She completed her undergraduate degree in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli and later earned a postgraduate degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. After completing her education, she worked as a senior manager in the research and analysis wing of Price Waterhouse, a leading consulting firm.

In 2008, Sitharaman was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, representing the state of Andhra Pradesh. She served as a member of various parliamentary committees, including the Standing Committee on Commerce, the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence, and the Select Committee on the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill.

In 2014, she was appointed as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry in the Government of India, and in 2017 she was appointed as the Minister of Defence, becoming the second woman to hold the position after Indira Gandhi. Since 2019, she is appointed as the Minister of finance and Corporate Affairs in government of India.

Sitharaman is known for her strong pro-market views and her advocacy for economic reforms.
