Andy Murray Left Bemused After New Video Review Technology Malfunctions at US Open

Andy Murray was left bemused after the new video review technology malfunctioned during his first-round win against Corentin Moutet at the US Open on Tuesday.

The Scot was serving for the match in the third set when Moutet requested the umpire to review a double bounce call. Following new protocol for the first time at the tournament, chair umpire Louise Engzell reached for a small screen to watch an instant replay of the point.

However, the screen was not working, and Engzell was forced to announce to the crowd that the video review could not be used. The original call of a point for Murray stood, and he went on to win the match 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

Murray was critical of the new technology, saying that it was "not good enough" for a Grand Slam tournament.

"It's a new system, but it's not good enough," he said. "It's not fair on the players if the system is not working properly."

The new video review technology is being used on five courts at the US Open this year. It allows players to challenge certain calls, such as double bounces, line calls, and foot faults.

The technology has been used successfully at other tournaments, such as the Australian Open and Wimbledon. However, it is the first time it has been used at the US Open.

The US Open tournament director, Stacey Allaster, said that the malfunction was "unfortunate" and that the tournament was working to fix the problem.

"We're disappointed that the VR system didn't work properly," she said. "We're working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."

The malfunction of the video review technology is a setback for the US Open, which is trying to improve the accuracy of its officiating. The tournament has been criticized in the past for its inconsistent officiating, and the new technology was seen as a way to address that problem.

However, the malfunction of the technology has raised questions about its reliability. It is unclear how often the technology will malfunction, and it is also unclear what will happen if it malfunctions during a crucial point in a match.

The US Open will need to address these questions if it wants to ensure that the video review technology is a success. The tournament cannot afford to have the technology malfunction on a regular basis, as it could undermine the integrity of the competition.

In the meantime, Andy Murray will be hoping that the video review technology is working properly when he takes to the court again. The Scot is still a major contender at the US Open, and he will need all the help he can get if he wants to win his third title in New York.

Both players, and the entire crowd, were able to watch the footage of the very tight call.

“Ladies and gentleman, unfortunately, the VR is not working,” Engzell said when addressing the stadium.

“What you are watching on the TV up here, comes from TV so the original call stands.”

CNN contacted the US Open to confirm the correct protocol was followed but has not yet received a response.

“I don’t know how exactly it’s supposed to work and who is supposed to make the decision on it. It’s quite clear from the second video that the ball bounced twice,” Murray added.

“We watched it about 10 times. It’s clearly not the umpire making that decision. I don’t know how the technology works.”
